Trivia
- Although the set was officially released in America on 9th January, 1999, many stores were initially reluctant to sell the game. As a result, the set didn't see a widespread release it until March or April.
- The first edition print run sold extremely quickly, making the Base Set first edition cards some of the most sought after of the early TCG expansions.
- All cards in the first few print runs were printed with thinner HP text and without shadows for the borders. These are commonly known as "shadowless cards" and are more valuable than later runs.
- The Japanese card sets in early Expansions, as well as their promotional cards, did not feature a number system. It wasn't until the release of Pokémon VS that the Japanese sets adopted such a system, albeit a different system than the alphabetical-rarity system used in the rest of the world. As such, no numbers are listed for the Japanese cards.
- While the English sets were ordered in alphabetical order and in descending rarity, the Japanese sets were ordered by type (Grass, Fire, Water, Lightning, Psychic, Fighting, Colorless), Pokédex (National) number and ascending rarity. It wasn't until e-Card 2 that they simplified it to ordering the cards by type and Pokédex number.
- This set has been out of print for quite some time, and was replaced by Base Set 2 upon its release.
