Viridian City
When you enter Viridian City, the first building you'll see is the Poké Center. This Pokémon hospital will heal your team to full health and normal status, and trainers are free to use the PC in the corner. In addition to accessing your item storage, these PCs can also access your Pokémon storage. Since you can only carry 6 with you at once, any others are immediately transferred to storage upon capture. It is typically a good idea to heal up and save your progress whenever you enter a Poké Center.
When you are done at the Poké Center, enter the building behind it - the Poké Mart. These stores are where you can buy Poké Balls, Potions, and other items. When you enter the Mart, the cashier catches you right away, and asks you to deliver a parcel to Professor Oak.
You can't go north yet, since the old man won't let you through until he gets his coffee, and you won't be able to buy anything until you deliver it, so walk south to Pallet Town.
Back to Pallet Town
When you hand over the package to the professor, your rival runs in, yelling about how much his Pokémon has grown. Oak doesn't pay much attention, and gives you each a Pokédex, a high-tech Pokémon encyclopedia. This little machine will record all available data on the Pokémon you encounter, and will be complete as possible when you catch a member of every species. Visit your rival's sister before leaving town, and she'll give you a Town Map.
You're done in Pallet Town, so head back north to Viridian.
Viridian City
Now that you've delivered Oak's parcel, you can see what the Poké Mart has on sale.

If have a few extra Potions, you may want to venture west to Route 22. You won't get very far yet, but your rival will run up to you, and challenge you again. You'll have to battle him here sometime, and the experience will be beneficial for your Pikachu, who may have a tough time against the first Gym.

Pokémon Academy
This school teaches young Pokémon Trainers about the basics of battle. If you inspect the blackboard in the front of the room, you can learn about the five status conditions that can affect your Pokémon.
The Old Man
The old man that wouldn't let you through earlier has had his coffee now. When you first pass him, he tries to show you how to catch a Pokémon. It doesn't work, and he runs off to buy more Poké Balls.
Viridian Gym
The Viridian Gym is closed indefinitely. The Gym Leader will not return to his post until you have defeated the seven other Gym Leaders and have the seven other badges to prove it. You won't be back here for a long while, so don't worry about it right now.
Later...
Once you know Cut and Surf, you'll be able to reach the guy in the southwest of the city. Talk to him to get TM50 (Nightmare).
When you're done in Viridian, walk north to Route 2.

You can't cut down the stunted trees yet, so you'll only have access to the western half of the route for now. Follow the path through the tall grass, and enter the gate.

Once inside the forest, there are a few areas to explore. To find a free item, follow the trail left and then up. To the left, hidden in the tall grass, is a Poké Ball. Return to the forest entrance, but this time follow the path to the right. The first person you see won't have anything interesting to say, but the next person certainly will - he's your first non-Rival trainer battle!
After defeating him, continue north along the path, and you'll encounter a second Trainer. After that battle, follow the left trail beyond the signpost to find a Potion. Make a left and walk through the tall grass, and you'll find a third Trainer. Wander back and forth through the northwest part of the forest, and you'll find another Potion on the ground. Walk past the "Trainer Tips" sign, battle one last trainer, and exit the gate to the north end of Route 2.
Route 2 (north)
There's not much to do on the route's north end besides hunting a few Pidgey and Rattata. Head north and you'll be in Pewter City - home of the Pewter Gym, and your first badge!
