The Applin evolutionary line is notable for having three different evolutionary branches, capable of evolving into any one of Flapple, Appletun, or Dipplin based on the flavor of the apple it inhabits. All members of the Applin family are dual Grass/Dragon type, and possess a base stat total of 485 in their second stage.
Applin
- Main article: Applin (Pokémon)
Applin is the first member of its branched family and the unevolved basis from which its evolved forms derive from. Like Tyrogue and Eevee, it is capable of evolving into multiple different Pokémon, sharing the same number of evolutionary branches as Tyrogue. Applin was introduced in Generation VIII, and it can only learn Astonish and Withdraw by level-up, though it learns a few other moves via breeding.
Applin is a dragon-like "wyrm" living inside an apple, which inspires its namesake and type. Its eyes stick out from the top of the apple it inhabits, while its tail from the bottom of said apple. It is said that it uses this apple as a means of protection from prey and from dehydration, as well as its primary food source. The flavor of the apple it inhabits ultimately determines what it will evolve into.
Applin can evolve into one of three different Pokémon, depending on the apple used on it.
Flapple
- Main article: Flapple (Pokémon)
Flapple evolves from Applin when exposed to a Tart Apple. In Sword and Shield, the Tart Apple is exclusive to Sword. Flapple primarily specializes in offense and speed at the expense of bulk, especially physical firepower. It learns moves such as Dragon Dance, Dragon Rush, and Fly by level-up, and has the Hidden Ability Hustle to boost its Attack at the expense of accuracy.
Flapple is a flight-capable wyrm-like Pokémon with apple slices for wings and a tail. It is the only Pokémon capable of learning Grav Apple, which deals damage and lowers Defense. In Pokémon Sword and Shield, it can transform into Gigantamax Flapple and use its signature G-Max Move, G-Max Tartness.
Appletun
- Main article: Appletun (Pokémon)
Appletun evolves from Applin when exposed to a Sweet Apple. In Sword and Shield, the Sweet Apple is exclusive to Shield. Appletun specializes in bulk and defense, with high HP and good Defense stats, while having very low speed. It learns moves such as Recover, Body Slam, and Recycle by level-up, and has the Hidden Ability Thick Fat to halve damage taken from Fire and Ice-type moves.
Appletun is shaped like an apple pie, with apples covering its eyes. It is the only Pokémon capable of learning Apple Acid, which deals damage and lowers Special Defense. In Pokémon Sword and Shield, it can transform into Gigantamax Appletun and use its signature G-Max Move, G-Max Sweetness.
Dipplin
- Main article: Dipplin (Pokémon)
Dipplin evolves from Applin when exposed to a Syrupy Apple. Unlike its other two counterparts, Dipplin was introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, in The Teal Mask expansion. It has a more defensively oriented statline akin to Appletun, with less HP and more physical Defense. It learns moves such as Recover, Dragon Tail, and Substitute by level-up, and has the Hidden Ability Sticky Hold, which prevents it from losing its held item.
Dipplin looks similar to Applin, but its apple is covered in syrup akin to a candy apple. It is two creatures in one, with the head being the fore-wyrm, and the tail being the core-wyrm, and the two share the apple and work together. It is the only Pokémon capable of learning Syrup Bomb, which inflicts damage and lowers the opponent's Speed for three subsequent turns. It also has a different signature ability from its other evolutionary relatives, possessing Supersweet Syrup, which lowers evasion of all opposing Pokémon by one stage upon entry into battle. Unlike Flapple and Appletun, Dipplin cannot Gigantamax, but instead is capable of evolving further, evolving into Hydrapple when leveling up knowing the move Dragon Cheer, starting from The Indigo Disk expansion.
