Spikes (Japanese: まきびし Spikes) is a non-damaging Template:Type2 move introduced in Generation II. Prior to Pokémon Crystal, it was the signature move of the Pineco evolutionary line.

Effect

Spikes sets spikes around the target Pokémon. From Generation III onwards, Spikes can be set up to three times, each increasing the damage done to the opponent upon switching in. One layer of Spikes will damage the opponent Pokémon by 12.5% of its maximum HP, two layers will deal 18.75%, and three layers will deal 25%. The damage inflicted upon switching in will not occur on Template:Type2s or Pokémon with Levitate unless Gravity is used. It also does not damage Pokémon with the ability Magic Guard. The moves Rapid Spin and Defog remove the effect of Spikes; Rapid Spin removes Spikes set around the Rapid Spinner while Defog removes Spikes set around the target of Defog.

Generation V

Spikes can now be reflected with Magic Coat.
