YTV is a TV channel owned by Corus Entertainment available nationally in Canada which launched September 1st, 1988. Its headquarters are in Toronto, Ontario. YTV is thought by many to stand for "Youth Television", due to the fact that its original slogan was "The Youth Channel". When asked about this, the channel states "Actually, it's just three letters! Really! Some folks think it means Youth Television, but that's just a coincidence; we just thought the letters looked good together!"

It is the Canadian broadcaster of the Pokémon anime. The channel has aired the anime since September 1998, from the first episode . Also, some movies get aired on weekends during "Moovibot" (formerly 3 hairy thumbs up).

Pokémon schedule

As of July 28, 2008, YTV airs the Pokémon anime 13 times per week. Until recently when YTV got deep into Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl, Pokémon: Battle Frontier episodes sometimes aired in the 8 AM timeslot.[1]

History with the anime

YTV used to air new episodes every Saturday at noon. The 3:30 EST weekday timeslot started with Following A Maiden's Voyage on Monday, April 7, 2008. This continued, and these episodes surpassed the new ones that came on Saturdays. Canada then got five new episodes per week. The episode that made the weekday afternoon episodes, excluding the Saturday ones, was Buizel Your Way out of This!. Pokémon also airs at 11:30 AM on Saturdays starting May 30, 2008, along with the one at noon. They are still going in the order the mid-day Saturday ones always have.

On Wednesday, June 18, the schedule got shook up again. The first season of the Diamond & Pearl series rounded out on Tuesday, meaning that Pokémon Diamond & Pearl: Battle Dimension should have started on the 18th. However, this did not happen due to YTV's habbits, as YTV aired Following A Maiden's Voyage, and continued in that rerun order. An odd brief appearance of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl: Battle Dimension was on for three weeks, every Friday at 8:00 AM EST, starting November 7, 2008. YTV is consistently changing their schedule around from Battle Frontier and Diamond and Pearl at the times of 3:30 PM EST and 8:00 PM EST. On Monday March 2, 2009, YTV officially started to air Pokémon Battle Dimension and only aired Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl episodes. On Wednesday, June 3, 2009, YTV aired the last episode of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl: Battle Dimension. The following day, it aired the first episode of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl: Battle Dimension, following YTV's usual trend.

Trivia

  • YTV has never banned an episode of the Pokémon anime, except those banned in Japan.
  • A recent Pokémon commercial that aired on YTV featured haikus, meaning YTV is probably aware of the Japanese Diamond and Pearl segment, the Pokémon senryū.
  • YTV refrains from airing new episodes until there is a sufficient ammount of episodes to air new episodes (to Canadians) five days a week, to the end of the season.
    • If YTV gets to the last episode of the season and there is not enough episodes released for the next season, YTV will repeat the current season that they are on from the first episode.
