The Capture Styler has many functions, with the main one being capturing Pokémon. Other functions include the Ranger Browser, the Ranger's equivalent to the Pokédex (but only encompassing 213 of the 386 Pokémon available in its generation), the Glossary, the save function (only available when near a save machine), and the retire option, allowing a complete restart of the mission the Ranger is currently on.

As said in the anime top rangers get to use the batonnage styler. This new styler has all the same functions as the other styler except that it attaches to the wrist. Kellyn is the only known user of this new styler.
Capture Disc
The Capture Disc is launched by a Capture Styler so that the Ranger may befriend the Pokémon. It may gain power-ups like Poké Assists and Power Charges.

Wild Pokémon
Capture Line
Wild Pokémon have two different functions when used with the Capture Styler, detailed below.

The Capture Line is the trail that a Capture Disc leaves behind. Every loop, called a Capture Line loop, increases the friendship given to the Pokémon.

Pokémon Ranger Field Moves
Capturing Pokémon
Field Moves are special moves Pokémon can use outside of battles.  They were first introduced in Pokémon Ranger and are primarily used to remove an obstacle of some sort. They are similar to Hidden Machine moves from the traditional games, and two of them share names with the traditional HMs.
In Pokémon Ranger, when a loop is formed around a Pokémon, a number will appear above it, showing how many loops the player must make to capture the Pokémon. If the line is broken or the stylus is lifted off the screen, the player must remake all the loops from the start.

* Break: Destroys an object with physical force, like crushing a rock.
In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia and Guardian Signs, the bar below the Pokémon shows how much more friendship must be conveyed to capture the Pokémon. Some Pokémon require more than others. In certain captures in Guardian Signs, the Pokémon may also enter a rage mode where their bar turns red, and the Styler only conveys 10% of its friendship points to Pokémon until it has calmed down. Poké Assists can be used to aid in capture. All Pokémon lose friendship points over a period of time in a battle.
* Burn: Uses fire to burn through plants or ice.
* Recharge: Restores Capture Styler's HP.
* Cross: Pokémon attaches itself to something using a long reach and brings the player with it.
* Cut: Cuts through small fences or bushes.
* Flash: Lights up dark areas.
* Gust: Uses a strong wind to blow things away.
* Tackle: Pushes an object, like a box.
* Soak: Shoots water to put out fires.

Aside from "Flash" and "Cross", all Field Moves come in 3 different levels of power, such as "Tackle", "Tackle x2", and "Tackle x3".

Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia Field Moves
Types of Styler
In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia Field Moves have changed. Rather than having just three levels of Field Move the levels go up to x5 on some of the assists. Unlike on Pokémon Ranger the only Pokémon that don't have a Field Move are the ones that can't be kept with you. Also "Gust" using Pokémon have either changed to "Cut" or in one exception, used only to clear fog in one mission. "Cross" has been split from one Field Move used only to swing on posts to a variety of different travelling moves that involve riding on Pokémon over a variety of different terrains. Also, many new Field Moves have been created, some of which are unique, used only by certain Pokémon in certain places.

School Styler
The School Styler is given to students of the Ranger School, known as Student Rangers. It was developed to teach Student Rangers how to perform the basic tasks of a Pokémon Ranger. Due to its purpose, it has limited capabilities and does not come with the function to use Poké Assists.

* Electrify: Forces mechanical doors to open and machines to work.
Capture Styler
* Magic: Opens various magically locked doors.
After graduating from the Ranger School, Student Rangers become Area Rangers and are given a new Capture Styler. Unlike the School Styler, it allows Rangers to use Poké Assists. This is the only one available in Pokémon Ranger.
* Stench: Causes an area to smell very badly, making all of its inhabitants leave quickly (Skuntank only).
* Fly: Like the HM, transports you to different places on the map (Staraptor only).
* Ascend: Rise through a hole in a cave to a higher level (Drifblim only).
* Float: Float over a river of lava, using the hot natural gases provided by a steaming vent (Drifloon only).
* Run: Speed over the land at a high speed on a Doduo (only).
* Lava Swim: Ride through lava on the back of a Torkoal (only).
* Freshwater Swim: Ride a Floatzel (only) over a clear light blue river.
* Icewater Swim: Crash through icebergs in freezing water up north (Empoleon only)
* Dive: Ride Mantine (only) over abysses in the depths of the ocean
* Burrow: Sandshrew (only) burrows through a sandy floor to expose a hole that can now be fell or ascended through to get to another level in a cave.

Poké Assist
Fine Styler
Each Pokémon has its own Poké Assist. When using this, the Pokémon will jump into the capture styler and give it an extra power.

* Grass: Immobilizes Pokémon with plants that sprout from the Styler's beam. Ineffective on Flying, floating, and levitating Pokémon.
Once an Area Ranger becomes a Top Ranger, they receive the Fine Styler. This Styler appears to have similar functions, except the new Power Charge. The Power Charge has two levels and each one has more friendship power than the last. It has a different design as it is attachable to the wrist.
* Water: Creates a bubble that can be thrown to immobilise Pokémon. Stronger Water Pokémon will create larger, longer-lasting bubbles.
* Fire:  creates flames that sprout from the Capture Line that immobilizes Pokémon that touch the ring of fire.
* Fighting: Doubles the strength of the line so that each circle made with the Styler counts double! Using it against Normal, Ice, Rock, Dark, or Steel, triples the effect.
* Ground: Churns up the earth where the capture line has touched. Immobilizes land-moving Pokémon. Ineffective against Flying, floating, and levitating Pokémon.
* Ice: Closing a loop makes a patch of ice that freezes the Pokémon hit by it for a short time. Inaccurate and ineffective against many Pokémon.
* Ghost: When a loop is completed, a ghost appears in the center and will try to immobilize Pokémon.
* Dark: At the penalty of some of the Styler's energy, the maximum capture line length doubles.
* Bug: Blobs of webs can be flung by flicking the stylus on the screen that will stop Pokémon.
* Psychic: Pokémon are levitated in mid-air.
* Poison: The capture line leaves fog that works like grass or churned earth.
* Flying: Three whirlwinds are created in the same manner as the Bug assist.
* Electric:  Recharges the styler, with varying amounts depending on which level of the "recharge" field move it is.
* Rock:  Shoots rock shards in the same way as bug or flying assists. If they make contact, they may immobilize Pokémon.
* Discharge: Exclusive to Plusle and Minun, this stuns the Pokémon to be captured. Power and shape varies on bars filled. One bar makes a thin three-pointed star, two makes a thin X shape, three makes a thin five-pointed star, four makes a wide five-pointed star, and five makes a wide asterisk shape.

Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia New Poké Assists and Changes
Vatonage Styler
* Normal: Turns the capture line green and does a little more damage.
A one-of-a-kind Styler, the Vatonage Styler is used as part of Operation Brighton. This Styler allows a Ranger to befriend a Pokémon under hypnosis, unlike previous Stylers. It is a Fine Styler powered up with shards from the The King of Almia and the Three Princes. Getting power from the actual Gems themselves allows this Styler to befriend even Darkrai who have closed up their minds.
* Steel: Move the Styler around to create a ball of light energy, touch the Pokémon without lifting the stylus to inflict damage
* Dragon: Hold the Styler down to create a purple puddle, lift the Styler to make a large meteor hit the puddle, inflicting damage on any Pokémon in the way.
* Ice: Move the Styler to roll a snowball at its tip, lift the styler whilst moving it in a direction to throw the snowball in that direction to inflict damage and freeze the Pokémon
* Ground: Move the styler back and forth to create massive earthquakes that inflict damage, stop the Pokémon attacking and even stop it from moving, making it easier to capture.
* Bug: Move the styler to stretch a blob of sticky silk from the point at which the styler was placed on the screen, lift the styler to catapult a sticky globule at the Pokémon, damaging and paralyzing.
* Fighting: Every ring you draw around a Pokémon will do much more damage and the power will steadily grow.
* Electric: Touch the ground below the Pokémon, this will cause a lightning bolt to shoot towards the Pokémon, causing damage and paralyzing the Pokémon.
* Dark: If the Pokémon creates a stationary damaging patch on the map, e.g. puddle, drawing a ring around it will cause it to disappear.
* Psychic: Drawing a ring creates small rings of psychic power in the center of the ring, these rings can now be flicked at the Pokémon with the styler to inflict paralysis and damage.

Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs
In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, a new type of Styler is introduced. This Styler is designed similarly to a watch. Unlike other Stylers, it lacks a name. Like the Fine Styler, it possesses the Power Charge ability. It also has a Voice Nav., that will advise the player from time to time throughout their adventure and seems to have a personality of its own, first shown during Nema's upgrades to it, and last shown when it broke the fourth wall near the end of the Heatran Mission. This Styler, due to Nema's upgrade, is capable of utilizing Ranger Signs. After seeing a sign, the Voice Nav. will tell the player to record the sign into the Styler and from then on, the Styler can use Ranger Signs to call on Pokémon.

Trivia
* The Capture Styler was originally intended to be called "The Capture Loopy-Looper", when Professor Hastings first drew up blueprints for it.
* The Vatonage Styler's ability to befriend hypnotized Pokémon seems to extend only to those controlled by Gigaremo units, as once a Vatonage Styler is used to capture Pokémon controlled by Miniremo units, the Pokémon are still automatically released on the spot.
** However, it is noted that the player automatically releases any Pokémon directly controlled by Team Dim Sun, such as the Sinis Trio's Magmortar, Rhyperior, and Gallade, while using other Incredible Machine-controlled Pokémon normally. So, it can be implied that the player also releases Miniremo-controlled Pokémon immediately after their capture, like they do with the others.
* The Capture Styler rivals the Pokédex in sturdiness and immunity to all conventional dangers that could be recreated by Pokémon attacks, such as water, fire, and electricity. It is even shown to be able to work with interference to radio signals in Pokémon Ranger - Deoxys' Crisis. Solana says that this is because it is hermetically sealed to prevent any conventional shock or damage from reaching the Capture Styler's inner workings.
** However, in the second Ranger game, Crawford says that the crazy heat is interfering with his Styler.
** In the third Ranger game, seawater got into the Styler and interfered with some of its functions.
* If the Styler is reduced to 0 HP because of damage from the Pokémon it is trying to capture, then the Capture Disc will explode.
* In the original Ranger, the more times a player loops a Capture Styler line around a captured wild Pokémon, the more experience points will be gained.
* In Pokémon Ranger: Heatran Rescue!, Ben lost his Capture Styler when he fell into a river, and TRT found it. When James tried to use it, it didn't work. Ben explained that this was because not only one has to bond with the target Pokémon, but a Ranger's Styler can only be used by the Ranger assigned to it, and no one else. This implies that Professor Hastings learned from when the Super Styler got stolen in Fiore and rolled out newer stylers with a lock to prevent a future incident.
* The "Styler" part in the device's name may be a reference to the Nintendo DS Stylus, which is used to control the Styler.
* In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, the maximum power of the capture styler is 1405. This can be achieved with a base of 350, latent power, a charge level of 2, 6 uninterrupted loops, and power plus. This number almost doubles in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs where with the same setup yields 2000+
* For Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! (Part 2), Professor Oak's Big Pokémon Encyclopedia is about the Capture Styler. He writes this senryū about it: 「さあミッション たのむぞポケモン キャプチャ・オン」 "It's time for a mission, so I'm counting on you, Pokémon — Capture On!"

A wild Scyther being captured

A Capture Styler (Japanese: キャプチャー・スタイラー Capture Styler) is a device invented by Professor Hastings and used by Pokémon Rangers. It allows them to temporarily take command of wild Pokémon and it also has built-in phone capabilities.

It is similar to a remote-controlled toy top. A spinning, top-like device called a Capture Disc is launched which is controlled from the main device.

Trivia

  • The Capture Styler was originally intended to be called "The Capture Loopy-Looper", when Professor Hastings first drew up blueprints for it.
  • The Vatonage Styler's ability to befriend hypnotized Pokémon seems to extend only to those controlled by Gigaremo units, as once a Vatonage Styler is used to capture Pokémon controlled by Miniremo units, the Pokémon are still automatically released on the spot.

It is even shown to be able to work with interference to radio signals in Pokémon Ranger - Deoxys' Crisis. Solana says that this is because it is hermetically sealed to prevent any conventional shock or damage from reaching the Capture Styler's inner workings.
    • However, in the second Ranger game, Crawford says that the crazy heat is interfering with his Styler.
