Ash's Tsutarja (Japanese: サトシのツタージャ Satoshi's Tsutarja) is the fourth Pokémon that Ash caught in the Isshu region.

History

Ash and Tsutarja

Appearing in BW007, Tsutarja was discovered by Ash and his friends after she stole some food from them. Iris and Dent speculated that Tsutarja abandoned her Trainer who she deemed unworthy, as she was clearly demonstrating a high level of competency and skill, evident in her first escape from Ash by infatuating Pikachu with Attract then escaping using Leaf Storm.

Ash was able to capture Tsutarja when he won her respect, and was recognized before her eyes as a Trainer of not only skill, but of qualities like his unwavering determination and overpowering spirit. Despite his countless defeats with Tsutarja, especially when the majority of his team (Pikachu, Mijumaru, Pokabu) succumbed easily to her Attract, Ash nevertheless followed her all the way throughout from the time they met to the point of her capture. During this journey, Ash showed her two notable acts of sacrifice. The first when he shielded Pikachu from her Vine Whip, and the second when he asked Pikachu to climb onto his head when they were sinking into a muddy swamp. At last, Ash had to perform a show of skill before he could capture her. Luckily for Ash, Mamepato was also female and was not affected by Attract, and this allowed him to battle on even grounds. In the battle that ensued, Tsutarja was weakened considerably, and just before her capture, she let out a feeble smile that signified her acceptance of her Trainer.

Ash used Tsutarja in a battle with Shooti in BW010, with its Attract it was able to defeat Shooti's Janovy. It was later called upon to battle Shooti's Pururiru, Ash, who had no knowledge of his opponents ability Cursed Body, commanded Tsutarja to use physical attacks which ultimately led to their loss.

• Tsutarja's capture was first revealed in a short preview aired after DP190, featuring all the Isshu starters.
• The capture of Tsutarja marks the first time Ash has owned all three of the region's starters since his adventures in Johto.
  • Notably, in each of those regions, each Grass-type knew Vine Whip, and none of them are in their final stage.
• Tsutarja's capture was Ash's last capture of the three Isshu starters. To contrast, in the previous four regions, each region's Grass-type starter was the first Starter to be caught by Ash.
• Tsutarja is Ash's fourth Pokémon species to have its gender confirmed before he obtained it. The first three were Tauros (male only), Buizel (the two spots on its back) and Gible (due to the notch in its fin). In the case of Tsutarja, its gender was confirmed when it used Attract on Pikachu, who is male. Out of all these Pokémon, Tsutarja is the only female and the only one that was not confirmed through gender differences, as Tsutarja has none.
  • Tsutarja is also Ash's second Template:Type2 starter Pokémon to be confirmed female, the first being Bayleef.
• Tsutarja is the only Isshu starter owned by Ash that is not known to know Tackle.
• Tsutarja is the fifth Pokémon of Ash's to battle it's evolved form. The other four were: Pikachu, Treecko, Buizel, and Gligar. Of the five, only Pikachu, Buizel, and Tsutarja were able to defeat their evolved form.
