Ash's Gengar (Japanese: サトシのゲンガー Satoshi's Gangar) was the second Pokémon caught by Ash in the new series, and his fifty-fourth overall.

History

As a wild Pokémon

Gengar originally belonged to a Trainer who told it to wait for him at the place that would later become the Sakuragi Institute. Not knowing that its Trainer had no intention to return, Gengar obediently waited for months, even staying at the building as it was converted into Professor Sakuragi's research center.

Gengar first appeared in SS011, where it was seen causing trouble at the Sakuragi Institute. It was eventually defeated when Koharu commanded Yamper to use Spark, causing it to flee. It was later seen at the end of the episode, perched atop of the Institute.

Gengar reappeared in SS014, where it phased through the wall and watched Ash, Go, and their Pokémon after they had returned from Unova.

Gengar and Ash

Gengar reappeared in SS016, where it once again caused trouble at the institute and subsequently hid in Ash's shadow. When Ash ran into Gengar's former Trainer, it heard him talking about his abandonment, and started attacking him. When the Trainer fled in fear, Gengar ran off as well. Team Rocket found Gengar and asked it to join them, and when it refused, they instead tried to capture it. Ash showed up and managed to free Gengar, even convincing it to fight Team Rocket alongside him. After defeating Team Rocket's two Dusclops, Ash asked Gengar come with him, but he collapsed before it could respond. When Ash later woke up at the institute, Gengar dropped a Poké Ball for him, showing that it had accepted to join his team. Ash such, Ash proceeded to catch Gengar.

Trivia

  • Gengar is Ash's first officially owned Ghost-type Pokémon.
    • Gengar is also Ash's first Pokémon whose coloration is different from others of its species but is not a Shiny.
  • Gengar being abandoned by its Trainer who told it to wait for him, while they had no intention of ever returning, is similar to how Ash's Charmander was abandoned by Damian.
