{{Ash}} and {{ashfr|his friends}} find themselves lost in a forest on their way to Azalea Town. {{an|Brock}} thinks there must be something wrong with the map but Ash says all they need to do is keep going through the forest until they reach the road again. A kid with purple hair comes up to them and asks if they have seen any {{p|Cyndaquil}} around. This interests Ash who looks around excitedly. Ash starts looking through bushes and the kid threatens him to leave any Cyndaquil he finds alone. Brock and {{an|Misty}} tell him he can't tell Ash to leave them alone and if he finds one he has the right to catch it. In the meantime Ash and Pikachu have ran off in search of Cyndaquil. [[Team Rocket]] set their sights on Brock and Misty, believing Ash and {{AP|Pikachu}} are with them. [[Jessie]] and [[James]] start talking about all the menial jobs they took to raise money for the new equiptment they bought to build a new machine. Jessie is shown working fast food and James is at a construction job. Team Rocket starts their motto when they reach Brock and Misty but stop when they realize Ash and Pikachu aren't with them.  Team Rocket spots Ash and Pikachu in the woods and goes after them, firing a "bubble gum bomb" using their new Meowth mecha. Pikachu uses {{m|Thunderbolt}} but the mecha absorbs it. Ash runs saying he doesn't have time for them. The mecha targets Ash and James fires another bubblegum bomb at Ash. It misses and they trip over a tree root. Ash and Pikachu emerge from the forest and come across a series of small caves along a wall of rock.  A Cyndaquil pops out of one of the caves. Ash gets out his [[Pokédex]] and then starts to climb up to the cave. The purple haired boy from before sees Ash climbing up to the Cyndaquil so he commands his Sandslash to use {{m|Sand-Attack}}. Sand flies into Ash's face and he slips and falls back to the ground. Cyndaquil runs back into the cave it came from and both Ash and the kid run after him. When Ash enters the cave he sees several small holes where Cyndaquil could have gone. He then sees Cyndaquil run past him but before he can go after it he is tripped by Sandslash.


Team Rocket aims a "putty ball" in to the cave to try and run Ash out. The ball heads straight towards him and he runs to avoid it. Meanwhile the purple haired boy has Cyndaquil up against a wall and is trying to battle with it. His Sandslash uses {{m|Poison Sting}} but before it can hit Ash grabs Cyndaquil while running from the putty ball. The putty ball hits the kid and then goes after Ash again. Ash is blasted out of the cave and confronted by Team Rocket. Finally they trap Ash and Pikachu with a bubblegum bomb. Ash lets Cyndaquil free and tells it to run before it gets hurt. Cyndaquil doesn't move and Team Rocket attempts to trap it. Cyndaquil uses {{m|Flamethrower}}, destroying Team Rocket's mecha. Ash throws a [[Poké Ball]] at Cyndaquil so it doesn't get hurt by the explosion just as Team Rocket blasts off. Ash discovers he has caught Cyndaquil as Brock and Misty show up. The purple haired kid comes out of the cave and challenges Ash to a battle to see who gets Cyndaquil. Brock remarks that Ash already caught Cyndaquil so he doesn't have to battle for him but Ash accepts the challenge. He even uses Cyndaquil in the battle, confident that it will use that powerful Flamethrower attack again. Cyndaquil does nothing in battle besides dodging Sandslash's attacks. Ash is impressed with Cyndaquils defense skills which wear Sandslash out. Sandslash recovers and uses {{m|Swift}}, which Ash tells Cyndaquil to counter with Flamethrower. Cyndaquil's Flamethrower attack fails. Cyndaquil continues to dodge all attacks then finally finishes the battle with {{m|Tackle}}. Angered, the kid gets out a bug net and tries to steal Cyndaquil. The flames on Cyndaquils back rise up and it lets out an impressive Flamethrower. Ash embraces Cyndaquil and declares that he has caught a new Pokémon! The episode ends with Team Rocket looking up at the stars, stuck with yet another construction job.

Ash decides to change his strategy and has Cyndaquil continue to dodge Sandslash's attacks. Soon enough, Sandslash knocks Cyndaquil into a tree. As Sandslash goes in for a finishing Fury Swipe, Cyndaquil leaps into the air and Sandslash's claw becomes stuck in the tree trunk. Cyndaquil dives down and lands a {{m|Tackle}} on Sandslash's head, ending the match. Koji, refusing to concede defeat, recalls Sandslash and pulls out a net to snare himself Ash's Cyndaquil. However, the flames on Cyndaquil's back rise up and it finally lets out an impressive Flamethrower, scaring Koji away. Koji emerges from the cave system and readies his Sandslash to attack. Ash holds him arms out and explains that he has already caught Cyndaquil. Koji challenges Ash to a battle over Cyndaquil. Ash accepts despite Brock's insistence that he doesn't have to, and even uses Cyndaquil in the battle, confident that it will use its powerful Flamethrower again. Koji declares that the match will be a one-on-one single Pokémon battle before the challenge ensues.

Koji makes the first move, and Sandslash attacks with a Fury Swipes. Cyndaquil wakes up in time to dodge the attack. Cyndaquil continues to evade Sandslash's attacks, impressing Ash with its technique. Sandslash is left exhausted and Ash commands Cyndaquil to use Flamethrower, but nothing happens. Koji demands his Pokemon continue battling and Sandslash continues to Slash away while Cyndaquil evades. Sandslash flicks sand into Cyandaquil’s eyes. It follows up with a Swift attack and lands a direct hit after Cyndaquil was unable to perform Flamethrower to counter. Ash decides to change his strategy and has Cyndaquil continue to dodge Sandslash's attacks. Soon enough, Sandslash knocks Cyndaquil into a tree. As Sandslash goes in for a finishing Fury Swipe, Cyndaquil leaps into the air and Sandslash's claw becomes stuck in the tree trunk. Cyndaquil dives down and lands a Tackle on Sandslash's head, ending the match. Koji, refusing to concede defeat, recalls Sandslash and pulls out a net to snare himself Ash's Cyndaquil. However, the flames on Cyndaquil's back rise up and it finally lets out an impressive Flamethrower, scaring Koji away. Ash embraces Cyndaquil and declares that he has caught a new Pokémon. Elsewhere, Team Rocket looks up at the stars as they do another menial construction job.
