A successful tweak.

Tweaking, sometimes called holepunching to commemorate its discoverer, is a glitch in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl that causes the game to fail to load the graphics of an area.

What causes the effect

Maps in Diamond and Pearl are broken up into 32-step by 32-step squares that are visible at any one time, with nine of these squares loaded at any given time. When a player crosses over the game's various "load lines", located halfway across these 32×32 squares, the next area is loaded to memory, while the previous is unloaded. Through this, the overworld becomes a seamless area.

Using the bicycle in fourth gear, however, can cause the player to move too fast for the game to load the areas properly, especially if he or she changes direction while doing so to cross over the two load lines in the center of a square nearly simultaneously. Doing so triggers a race condition bug, causing varying effects such as a black area, a white area, or even, at times, a completely different section to load, or often simply freezing the game.

The distortion caused by tweaking can be solved easily by crossing a load line away from the distortion, as when the section is loaded again, it will be normal. It can also be solved by looking at a different menu screen, then returning to the overworld.

Exploitation

By tweaking in a specific manner in an area that has buildings that the player can enter, as well as forcing the game to load the section in such a way that the player can walk into the dark area, buildings can be entered through their currently invisible and not properly loaded walls. By reloading the map while the player is inside of the building, behind the warp to the actual inside of the building, and walking south, the player can end up on the inside of the building, but in the void area around the normally accessible portion, somewhat like the Surf glitch. Like the Surf glitch, a way can be found through the interconnecting area of this void to Newmoon Island and the Flower Paradise, where Darkrai and Shaymin reside. Arceus is yet to be found with this glitch. The same risks associated with the Surf glitch, such as locking oneself in the Mystery Zone, are found here. It may also cause the game to become permanently frozen, requiring a new game to be started.

Although the graphics are loaded in a different manner in Pokémon Platinum, this glitch returns in Platinum and in HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions.

How to find Darkrai

Materials:

Here is how to find Darkrai through the Tweaking Glitch:

  • First, enter the Jubilife City void, the video can be found on YouTube by an individual named Zowayixx.
    • From the point behind the door, go south 1 step and go east 5 steps.
      • Go north for a total of 430 steps. Use a bike when you encounter the first Mystery Zone. You should be on the first step into Jubilife City and one step behind you should be Turnback Cave.
        • Save and reboot.
          • After you reboot, bike east for 780 steps, clear your Step Counter, and head north for about 64500 steps.
            • After biking north, you should be able to bike across water and land, just like WTW. You will land in Route 224, but in this case, Fake-Sinnoh.
              • Follow the map to Canalave City. Everything should be just like normal, except the only location with the correct placements is Jubilife City.
                • Once you arrived in Canalave City, bike north until you reach Fullmoon Island.
                  • Go east from Fullmoon Island and you'll reach Newmoon Island, go on land, not on the steps, and save.
                    • After you reboot, you should be in a black area, much like earlier. Open the menu, choose Bag, and go back out.
                      • This time, you should be in the real Newmoon Island. Head inside and battle Darkrai. Remember, you cannot go back there via the ferry, so you can restart the process to reach Darkrai again, in case you fail.

How to find Shaymin

To find Shaymin, all the materials can be kept, and the steps are somewhat similar. You HAVE to bring Fly or Teleport, as they are essential for escaping the Flower Paradise once Shaymin is caught or defeated.

              • You have to enter through land, as there are barriers blocking entrance from the water. Beside the white rock, which is a slight square, there's a one way entrance, capable of giving you only one space to enter Seabreak Path.
                • Once you got onto Seabreak Path, make sure you save on land, in the middle of the white road, and in a Jubilife City area.
                  • Reload the graphics after you reboot, by opening Bag and press B. Move up along the flower road until you reach Shaymin, and remember to save before fighting it.
                    • After successfully defeating it or capture it, use Fly or Teleport to escape.

How to find Giratina

Amazingly, Giratina can be encountered as soon as three hours into the gameplay, but the player is way too low-leveled to capture it legitimately. The materials are all the same, but two things are essential: Fly and Escape Rope.

        • Go west 10 steps and save, then reboot.
          • After you reboot, head south for 300 steps, you should be in Turnback Cave, save and reboot.
            • If the reboot is successful, you will still be in Turnback Cave. Head south until you run into a wall with white circles below, and reload the graphics.
              • You should find yourself behind the entrance to Turnback Cave, so head south 1 step.
                • Since you're in the Fake-Turnback Cave, it works just like the real one. However, you are still in Jubilife City Poketch Co.
                  • Enter the rooms to find three pillars, and fight Giratina.
                    • Once finished, head outside to the Sendoff Spring and Fly to the real Jubilife City.
