Template talk:Spritebox/1
Order
I think we should put the Red/Green sprites at the beginning, rather than at the end, like so:
| Generation I | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||
I believe this would be better because it is more chronological and it allows for easier comparison to be made between RG sprites and RB sprites. Putting the Yellow sprites inbetween, which are very different compared to the other two, just adds confusion. --Celadonkey 21:06, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
- I agree with this, doesnt really make sense to have RG sprites after yellow Meervo (talk) 19:46, 19 February 2023 (UTC)
- I agree too, going from the old blue sprites to the new yellow sprites back to the even older green sprites can look disorganized. Putting them in RG → RB → Y order allows for a better comparison between RG and RB and would be chronological. Ruinedstego (talk) 14:56, 20 February 2023 (UTC)
Adding G1 sprite color variations on Pokémon pages

Game Boy Color sprite examples

Pokémon Red and Green sprite examples

Please check this: Draft:Spritebox/1. It contains a few more sprite color variations suggested for this template.
As discussed lately on Discord, I originally suggested displaying all these GB/SGB/GBC sprites together at once. However, it seems people generally prefer the collapsible version with the [show/hide] button -- only the GB sprites shown by default, while SGB and GBC are hidden by default.
The template currently used on Pokémon pages has a few color palette issues:
- Pokémon Red and Green are sharing the same front and back sprites for each Pokémon, but in fact each game has a different shade of white. I think those Dewgong and Persian sprites are good examples because they have mostly white pixels.
- All the G1 games are currently sharing the same back sprite instead of the colors from each game.
The G1 sprites also used to have all kinds of inconsistent colors (basically, some of them had a purple or green tint and others were pure white even when they were supposed to share the same palette) and a few tranparency/spacing issues. I reuploaded all the sprites a few weeks ago, based directly on the game data and disassembly projects.

- IMO the Super Game Boy/Game Boy Tower sprites make more sense as a default since the game specifies a color palette for that particular Pokémon, whereas the console-based color palettes are all the same for every Pokémon. This means that the SGB sprites convey both the pixel data and Game Freak's intended coloration, while the GB/GBC sprites only convey the pixel data (since the palette is determined solely by the console/game combo). - Some arguments in favor of GB (grayscale):
- As discussed before on Discord, the games were originally released and marketed for the Game Boy. The "GAME BOY" text is written in large letters on the front of the G1 game boxes.
- The G1 games were also rereleased in grayscale for the 3DS Virtual Console (except non-Japanese Yellow has the GBC palettes) and also appear in grayscale in other official media such as the 1008 Encounters video.
- The SGB palettes are technically restricted to peripherals for the SNES and N64 (Stadium series with Transfer Pak) and have not been reused in any other official Nintendo systems released these last few decades such as the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Player (Game Cube), and Virtual Console (3DS).
- Some arguments in favor of SGB:
- Yes, it's true that SGB (and non-Japanese Yellow for GBC) is the one that conveys more information than just the pixels.
- The SGB color palettes are present in the data of each game so this obviously means that SGB support was intended since the beginning.
- In English, the manuals, boxes, and some early guidebooks have game screenshots with SGB palettes.
- Personally, my choice would be showing the GB/SGB/GBC sprites together. But I don't mind either way. --Daniel Carrero (talk) 04:22, 18 June 2026 (UTC)
