Origin?

To me sandslash kind of resembles a enchidna? -- GoldHusky2009 11:55, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

El Chupacabras

Sandshrew may be inspired in part by El Chupacabras. For one thing, the both have spikes going down their backs, the both stand on two legs, Chupacabra is 3-4 feet and Sandslash is 3'03, and they're both usually found in hot, sometimes sandy, areas. Pawsrent 23:53, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Highly unlikely. It doesn't scream "chupacabra" when most people look at it. Most people think of a hedgehog or echidna, and it doesn't even look the slightest bit like descriptions. They're said to look almost lizard-like, so Crocanaw would be a better fit than Sandslash because of that. Personally, I would never have even thought of a chupacabra when looking at Sandslash. R.A. Should this and other Alola forme Pokémon be locked?

Since these are relatively new, should we lock these? - unsigned comment from OdieboyDuck (talkcontribs)

As you've probably seen, the staff were already in the process of doing so when you posted this message. They generally tend to be well on top of locking pages to avoid prerelease speculation, so maybe wait next time to make sure they're not already doing it? Possible Alolan Sandslash inspiration?

Barbegazi, anyone?

  • [B] Gnome-like creature, sometimes depicted with a pointed hat—[AS] Conical spike on head
  • [B] Hair described as being covered in icicles—[AS] Icicle-like spikes covering scales/quills
  • [B] White beard—[AS] White underside, including around mouth
  • [B] Huge feet for traversing snow; said to be skilled diggers—[AS] Well-developed claws for digging through snow
  • [B] Skiis down snowy mountain slopes—[AS] Races across snowfields; said to be the fastest Pokémon on snowy mountains
  • [B] Whistles like a marmot (a rodent)—[AS] Classified as a Mouse Pokémon

There may also be some Yamaoroshi, a radish-grater-born porcupine yokai whose name can be translated "mountain wind," mixed in for Japanese flavor (hence its Steel typing). (TBH, Kantonian Sandslash could also draw inspiration from the latter, especially considering the rust-colored scales/quills of its Shiny.) Icycatelf (talk) 20:48, 8 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

late but. i'm reading all these and can't help but think this is an example of people starting their design processes at different origin points coincidentally arriving at the same conclusion. i mean if you were to design "Sandslash but ice" the first things you'd think of would prolly be "what if it has ice spikes/icicles instead of porcupine spikes" and "what if it's white to blend in with the snow, like how polar animals usually are". anZAsquiddles 2222(:D)SSSS (talk) 00:26, 20 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
