Error in Trip's strategy?

As explained by Cilan in BW091, Trip, with Serperior, uses Leer to lower defense, and then SolarBeam to take out the Pokémon in one hit. Alder calls it "truly a well calculated battle setup" when Trip repeats the tactic in BW091. But SolarBeam is Special, so Leer shouldn't make the attack stronger. Yeah, perhaps. Though, move categories do exist in the anime. Just seven episodes earlier, in Ash's battle against Roxie, Dent says that Ash used Energy Ball to lower Koffing's Special Defense so that "the special attack Energy Ball" would deal even more damage the next time Ash used Energy Ball.
