→‎Outside of battle: I don't think we can really call the RSE sprite a Wailmer since it has so few distinguishing characteristics. It's also got completely different flippers from Wailmer, anyway... I think it's just meant to be generic.

The speed of Surfing has varied dramatically through games. In Generations I and II, the speed was at the same speed as walking. In Generation III the speed was increased to running-speed. In {{game|Diamond and Pearl|s}}, the Surfing speed was reduced to walking speed again. The speed was returned to running speed in {{game|Platinum}}.

When Surf is used outside of battle, the sprite of a specific sea Pokémon floating on the water is shown, resembling the player being carried by the Pokémon. In Generation I, a {{p|Dewgong}} is shown (although this was just the {{type|Water}} sprite; unless {{p|Pikachu}} is surfing, where a {{DL|Pikachu variants|surfing Pikachu}} sprite is shown instead). In Generation II, a {{p|Lapras}} is shown (unless {{p|Pikachu}} is surfing, where a surfing Pikachu sprite is shown instead). In {{game2|Ruby|Sapphire|Emerald}}, the sprite is a {{p|Wailmer}}. In {{game|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}} and all Generation IV and V games, the sprite is indistinguishable as a specific Pokémon.

From Generation III onward, the sprite is indistinguishable as a specific Pokémon.
