Pi Plays Pokémon Sapphire, stylized as π Plays Pokémon Sapphire, is an experiment by Twitch streamer armityle29, which involves using digits of the mathematical constant pi to play through Pokémon Sapphire, in order to find a "winning sequence". It started on October 16, 2021, 23:30 CET.

CAN THE NUMBER π BEAT POKÉMON?
Welcome to WinningSequence, where you can watch mathematical constants control games via their digits.
Inspired by the age-old question of "Can you find the entire works of Shakespeare in Pi?", and more recently by Mutekimaru Channel (Fish Plays Pokémon) and obviously TwitchPlaysPokemon, we aim to see whether there is a "game-winning sequence" inside well-known mathematical constants.
Every digit between 0-9 is mapped to a button and fed into the game per each second, making the number in question automatically play the game.
The stream is running on a Google Cloud server, and currently it is planned to be up 24/7 (except momentary pauses every 48h due to Twitch TOS).
Gameplay

The game is played on a Google Cloud server, and while it is planned to run 24/7, it is interrupted for a short while every 48 hours, per Twitch's Terms of Service. As the next digits of the decimal representation of pi are read every second, the input mapped to that digit is sent to an emulated Game Boy Advance. L, R, and SELECT cannot be pressed, since they do not play an essential role in gameplay. The input is also printed onto the Game Boy Advance screen, with the D-pad inputs and START being merely their first letter. The system does not permit more than one input to be sent at once, so it is impossible to use the Running Shoes or soft reset the game.
The numbers are mapped to inputs as below:
- 0, 5: START
- 1, 7: A
- 3, 9: B
- 2: Down
- 4: Left
- 6: Right
- 8: Up
This experiment is fully archived on YouTube on a single playlist. Each stream is split into four 12-hour-long parts. It is generally kept in reverse chronological order, but new entries are being added to the end and later moved to the front.
Progress
At the start, the title screen was completely skipped, already pointing at "NEW GAME". However, as B was pressed several times (including digit #1, which is 3), the game went back to the title screen. At digit #38, "NEW GAME" was selected. The male player character was chosen and named Seth. Treecko was chosen as the first partner Pokémon.
On May 23, 2024, during stream #471, Seth challenged May for their first battle. By that time, the Sceptile has grown to level 85, with the moves Pound, Leer, Leaf Blade, and Pursuit.

As of January 21, 2025, the furthest point reached was the battle with Bug Catcher Lyle in Petalburg Woods. During the run, six Shiny Pokémon were encountered: three Wurmple and three Zigzagoon. The in-game timer has registered so many frames that it has reached the maximum of 999 hours and 59 minutes; the actual timer is output by the !howlong command in chat.
