Most games in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series begin with a personality quiz[1] to determine the player's Nature. This, along with the player's gender, determines the species of the player character, the hero Pokémon (and, in Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, the partner Pokémon as well).
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity and the WiiWare titles, the personality quiz is absent; in these games, the species of the player character is manually chosen by the player.

The player will be asked 8 questions, with each question from one of 14 different categories; a category will not be chosen more than once. There is one exception to these rules: if "Fight" is chosen for the "alien invasion" question, a follow-up question is asked that does not count towards the total number of questions. After these questions, the player will be asked for their gender.

Questions
The game always starts off with:
- "Did you play Explorers of Time or Explorers of Darkness?"
This does not give any personality points by itself, but if "Yes" is answered, certain Natures will have points added to them after the player has chosen their gender. These correspond to the new choices of Pokémon available in Explorers of Sky - Phanpy, Shinx, and Riolu if male; Vulpix and Eevee if female.
Additionally, the following Pokémon's base recruit rate will be doubled as long as the player has not recruited them already. Most of these can be found in dungeons found at various points of the main story; Pokémon marked with a dagger (†) can be recruited only after the credits roll, while Feraligatr (§) has special conditions. Furthermore, Porygon2, Rampardos, Bastiodon and Bronzong internally use these doubled rates, but cannot be found in any dungeons that allow for recruitment.
The player will be asked 8 questions, with each question from one of 16 different categories; a category will not be chosen more than once. After these questions, the player will be asked for their gender.

Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon
In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, most of the questions asked do not directly determine the hero's species; only the sixth question decides which Pokémon is given, while the seventh question decides what species the partner will be. Unlike previous titles, the player has the option to decline the Pokémon suggested by the results of the quiz and instead manually pick the hero and partner's species.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, Pokémon that were previously only available for one particular gender in Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team are now possible results for players of both genders. As a result, several Nature/gender combinations have two Pokémon associated with them; in the event of such a combination occurring, a Pokémon is selected between the two at random. Like in Super Mystery Dungeon, the player is given the option to decline the Pokémon they are given and instead manually chose the hero's species.
