Release information
This card was included in the Ancient Origins expansion, first released in the Japanese Bandit Ring expansion. In Japan, it was reprinted as a Mirror Reverse Holofoil in the Premium Champion Pack. It was reprinted in the Japanese Premium Trainer Box, utilizing the XY Era Trainer card layout instead of the newly introduced Sun & Moon Era layout. The reprints later included in The Best of XY subset and the Ultra Sun Deck Build Box in Japan also use the old layout.
Rulings
It was announced in July 2017 that this card was to be banned from all sanctioned Pokémon TCG tournaments using the Expanded format as it was ruled to create an unbalanced playing environment. The use of this card allowed many dangerous strategies with Grass-type Pokémon, ranging from limiting the opponent's options to allowing a win on the first turn before the opponent can play. This card was also banned in the Gym Leader Challenge format from January 10, 2022 onward for the same reason.[1]
One such strategy evolved into a short-lived deck archetype known as Shiftry Donk, which involves Shiftry from Next Destinies. Due to that, Shiftry was banned from the Expanded format, but was unbanned when this card was banned.
The Stadium card Forest of Vitality released later in the Mega Evolution expansion can be considered an underpowered version of this card, as it only allows Grass-type Pokémon to evolve into other Grass-type Pokémon, and cannot be used to evolve Pokémon on either player's first turn.
