Trivia

Champions League tournaments were introduced in Japan in 2000 along with Battle Roads, serving as a climax to that portion of the season. The winners and other high ranking players from Battle Roads gained entry into the Champions League. From 2004, the Champions League operated in much the same way as the TCG National Championships in regions outside Japan, the top ranking players earning a place at the TCG World Championships.
The Champions League was held in Spring and Summer during 2000 and 2001, and once a year during Summer up until 2007, where there was both a Spring and Summer tournaments again, however, no card was awarded through the tournament until 2005. There was no Champions League held in 2008 due to the cancellation of the last three scheduled Battle Road tournaments as a result of a letter threat sent to the Pokémon Card Laboratory in April 2008. Champions League events were phased out in 2009 in favor of World Championship Qualifiers.
