Before Manabu goes to the official championship, Uratane suggests to him to first go to a card game Gym. He explains that Gyms are a great place to hone your skills and make friends through the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Convinced, Manabu goes to his nearest card game Gym, Kalos Toys.
When he gets there, the Gym's atmosphere is very sad and gloomy. This is because everyone in the Gym has been defeated by Arashi Kaijō, who complains that no one in the Gym is worth his time. Upon seeing Manabu, Arashi challenges him to a game, which Manabu immediately accepts. Manabu belives he is sure to win, thanks to his new deck built around his MegaCharizard Y. However, it is soon apparent that Arashi is much more skilled than Manabu, and is able to read his moves and counter them. Soon after, Manabu is overwhelmed and loses the game.
Afterward, Arashi is seen calling a strange man, letting him know that he met Manabu and won, and calling him Master.
