Walkthrough:Pokémon Diamond and Pearl/Part 2

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
These pages follow the original Nintendo DS iteration, not Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. The guide for those games can be found here.

Route 201

Route 201

Into the Unknown

On this latest visit to Route 201, the destination is Sandgem Town to the east. Following the eastward path leads through several patches of tall grass, where wild Pokémon like to hide. By defeating opposing Pokémon, your own Pokémon will earn valuable experience points and grow stronger!

Free Sample

Be sure to speak to the woman in the northeastern grass patch. She is a clerk at the Sandgem Town Poké Mart, and gives you a Potion as a free sample of their wares.

Sandgem Town is a small sandy town near the sea, located between Route 201 to the west, Route 219 to the south, and Route 202 to the north. Professor Rowan's laboratory, where he conducts research on Pokémon Evolution, is located here. It is also the hometown of his assistant, Dawn/Lucas.

Welcome to Sandgem

Soon after reaching the town, you are approached by Dawn/Lucas, who then leads you to the Pokémon Research Lab where Professor Rowan is waiting. Barry is exiting at the same moment, and bumps into you with a loud thud. He is relieved to find that Rowan is not as scary as he expected, and rushes off to the east. After he leaves, Dawn/Lucas leads you inside the building.

Rowan's Decision

Professor Rowan examines your Pokémon again and finds it to be rather happy. Seeing this, he chooses to entrust the young Pokémon to you, and offers you the chance to give it a nickname. He explains that Barry told him how well you battled at the lake, and that the growing bond between you and the Pokémon makes his decision easy.

Rowan's Request

The professor then officially introduces himself, and reveals that he has a favor to ask of you. He wants to learn exactly what kinds of Pokémon live in the Sinnoh region, and doing so requires collecting lots of data. To help you with the task, he gives you a Pokédex. This handheld device is a high-tech encyclopedia that records data on every Pokémon that the user encounters; limited information is recorded when seeing a Pokémon in battle, while obtaining a Pokémon records all remaining data. The Pokédex is considered complete when a member of each species has been seen in battle. Rowan hopes that you will travel everywhere and meet every kind of Pokémon, and tells you that your grand adventure begins right now.

His assistant then reveals the species of her/his own first partner Pokémon, which will be the one with a type disadvantage against your own, and officially introduces herself/himself as Dawn/Lucas. She/He is also working to complete the Pokédex, and is happy to act as a mentor to you.

"Pokédex" now appears on the main menu.

City Tour

When you exit the building, you find Dawn/Lucas waiting for you. As the more experienced Trainer, she/he decides to take you on a tour of the city to help you become acquainted with essential services.

Pokémon Center

The first building you will see is the red-roofed Pokémon Center. This Pokémon hospital will heal your team to full health and eliminate any status ailments they may have. Each facility also has a PC for Trainers to use, where they can access their Pokémon storage, Mailbox, and use Seals to decorate their Poké Balls. As Trainers may only carry six Pokémon with them at once, any others are immediately transferred to storage upon capture. It is a good idea to heal up and save your progress whenever you find a Pokémon Center.

Poké Mart

Another shop with a blue roof sits to the east of the Pokémon Center. This is the local Poké Mart; these stores offer a variety of Poké Balls, Potions, and other items. Novice Trainers will find a limited selection of goods available, which gradually expands as they become more accomplished in their adventure. It is helpful to stock up on supplies whenever possible, as there is no telling what you may run into on your journey.

Going Home

Dawn/Lucas realizes that Rowan's Pokédex project may take you far away from home, and she/he suggests letting someone know of your plans first. The young Trainer then leaves northward for Route 202.

Home

Back at home, speak to Mom to have her restore your Pokémon to full health. She then learns of your involvement with Rowan's Pokédex project, and gives you a Journal to record your daily events. This notebook lists up to ten entries and is reviewed automatically when loading a save file. Mom is excited to see you going on an adventure, but reminds you to come home sometimes.

Just then, Barry's mother enters. It seems that Barry shouted about going on an adventure and left home in a hurry again, but forgot an important item behind. Mom tells her not to worry, as you will deliver it to him. The woman gives you the Parcel, and tells you that Barry is likely headed to Jubilife City, on the far end of Route 202.

Route 202

Route 202

Route 202 connects Sandgem Town to the south with Jubilife City to the north. It is a winding path that twists through grassy fields, and a favorite training spot for novice Pokémon Trainers.

How to Catch a Pokémon

When you reach the nearest patch of tall grass, you are approached by Dawn/Lucas. The young Trainer wants to demonstrate how to catch a Pokémon, and leads you into the grass. A wild Bidoof soon appears, and the battle begins! She/He weakens the Pokémon first, then catches it in a Poké Ball and the battle ends.

Afterward, she/he mentions that it is important to weaken a wild Pokémon's HP as much as possible first, as healthy Pokémon are more difficult to catch. Inflicting status conditions, like sleep or paralysis, also increase the odds of capture. She/He gives you five Poké Balls to get you started, then leaves toward Jubilife City.
