Vermilion City (Japanese: クチバシティ Kuchiba City) is a city in Kanto. Situated near a sea inlet to the south, it contains a Pokémon Center, a Poké Mart, and serves as a popular sea port for ships such as the S.S. Anne. Vermilion Harbor is a home port for many ships. The S.S. Anne sails around the world and returns to Vermilion once a year. The S.S. Aqua sails from Olivine City in Johto to Vermilion Harbor. The ten Seagallop Ferries sail regularly to all of the Sevii Islands. Aside from the Harbor, the other exits to the city are Route 11 and Diglett's Cave to the east. North of the city is Route 6.

Vermilion City is home to the "Lightning American" Lt. Surge, the Leader of the Electric-specialist Gym. The people in the town are careful about pollution, as they are afraid of an infestation of Grimer could occur if the seas were ever polluted. For instance, Celadon City suffers from this in Generation II. Wild Pokémon appear in the sea around the city.

Places of interest

S.S. Anne

Main article: S.S. Anne

The S.S. Anne is a known luxury cruise liner which sails the world, stopping annually in Vermilion City. To get on the S.S. Anne in the games, players must obtain an S.S. Ticket by helping out Bill. This ship contains many Pokémon Trainers looking for a Pokémon battle, including many Gentlemen and Sailors. Battling through the ship is easy, however, because a room is provided with a bed that acts like a Pokémon Center, restoring all Pokémon on hand to full health. Before reaching the captain's cabin, players will encounter Blue, and must battle him.

Once Blue is defeated again, the player will be able to enter the Captain's quarters, where they will find him seasick. By choosing to help him by giving him a backrub, players will be able to get HM01 (Cut). Once the captain is healed, the S.S. Anne will sail away the moment players exit the ship, never to be seen again.

Pokémon Fan Club

The Kanto chapter of the Pokémon Fan Club is located in Vermilion. The Pokémon Fan Club is an organization spread throughout the Pokémon world, with at least one Club House in nearly every region. The Fan Club is basically a place for people to meet and chat about their favorite Pokémon and to show off their collections to each other. In general, the members are usually more oriented to unevolved, cute Pokémon and Pokémon Contests than Pokémon Battles.

By talking to the Fan Club Chairman he will start a long talk with the player. He talks about his two favorite Pokémon, Rapidash and Fearow at length and then gives the player a coupon to get a bicycle. In Pokémon Yellow he got a new hobby - taking Pokémon photos. The big photos of his Rapidash and Fearow can be seen on the walls of the clubhouse. He appears again in Pokémon Gold and Silver in the same place. Again, he talks about his Rapidash and gives the player a Rare Candy for listening to his story.

Construction Site

There is a man using a Machop to build a house on cleared off land in the north-east side of the city. Interestingly, he's still not finished three years after he started in Generation I, as he does not have enough money to begin building. This man's Machop can cause a glitch in Generation II.

In-game trade

In one of the houses south and a little east of the Pokémon Center is a girl that wants to trade the player a Farfetch'd for a Spearow. The Farfetch'd will be nicknamed "CH'DING" ("DUX" in Generation I), and it will be holding an Stick. The OT will be "ELYSSA" and its ID will be 08810. The Pokémon's level will be the same as the one that the player traded.

Fishing Brother

In Generation I and Generation III, a man known as the "Fishing Guru" can be found in Vermilion City, of Kanto, who gives away an Old Rod to the player. Later, in Generation II, he is known as the Fishing Dude and claims to be the eldest of the Fishing Brothers.

Vermilion Gym

Main article: Vermilion Gym

The Vermilion Gym is the official gym of Vermilion City. It is based on Template:Type2 Pokémon. The Gym Leader is Lt. Surge. Trainers who defeat him receive the Thunder Badge. Vermilion Gym appears in all games set in the Kanto region, appearing much the same in each: the main room is filled with 15 trash cans, and trainers are scattered about this room. Beyond this room is another, guarded by electric doors in Generation I, and an electric fence in Generation III. The only way to get in the final room, where Lt. Surge is located, was to find two switches underneath the trash cans. If the first switch was found, but the player incorrectly guessed the second one, the traps would reset. In Generation II, these traps are not turned on. After Lt. Surge is defeated, he will give the player the Thunder Badge, TM34 (Shock Wave), and the ability to use Fly outside of battle.

In the Pokémon Special manga

Vermilion is split into two main areas; the center city and the port. The Kanto Pokémon Fan Club headquarters is located in the center city and the S.S. Anne arrives once in a month in the port. Some of the citizens are PokéFans and sailors.

The first visit to Vermilion covers the rounds from Danger: High Voltorb to Buzz Off, Electabuzz!. Here, Red saves the citizens' Pokémon kidnapped by Lt. Surge.

When Yellow visits the city, the readers learn of the legend of Vermilion Harbor: The (proven) myth of the four stones that lie at the bottom of the harbor and never lose their powers of starting a Pokémon's evolution.

Differences among generations

Much has changed from Generation I to Generation III. Most of the city is now covered in grass and this is little sandy patches on the shores of the water. The construction site has become incredibly bigger, while the Pokémon Fan Club has had a redesign and grown larger in size. The S.S. Anne's port has also developed an archway at the entrance. In Generation II, nothing major has changed in Vermillion City. The city has extended into Route 11 into the Diglett's Cave.

Trivia

• Its Japanese motto is クチバは オレンジ ゆうやけのいろ.
• In Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, there is a truck which appears in the S.S. Anne's port of Vermilion which serves no evident purpose except as scenery. But, a popular rumor sprang up that a Poké Ball containing Mew could be found underneath. The rumor was proven false. Later, in the Generation III remakes of Red and Blue, the truck was added to the game as a reference to the old rumor. A Lava Cookie can be found under it.
