The Official Pokémon Advanced Handbook #4 by Maria S. Barbo (ISBN 0439559898) is a handbook that was published in 2003, and is the sequel to The Official Pokémon Handbook #3. It served as a paper form of the Hoenn Pokédex. It contained an entry for all the Generation III Pokémon, excluding Jirachi and Deoxys. This handbook is considerably shorter than the older handbooks.

Entries

All Pokémon from the same evolution family share a page. Pokémon with no evolution share a page with other Pokémon.

Name

Each entry has the Pokémon's name, and its species (e.g. Wood Gecko Pokémon for Treecko). It is then followed by facts about the Pokémon itself. Other features include a picture of the Pokémon.

Stats

The entries list the following stats:

  1. Type
  2. Height (in inches and feet)
  3. Weight (in pounds)
  4. Attacks (the basic and most commonly used moves of that Pokémon)

Attacks are not listed with the levels at which they are learned, and not all the moves the Pokémon can learn appear.

Evolution chain

At the very bottom of the entry there are pictures with arrows between them to show what the Pokémon evolves into. Pokémon that do not evolve do not have an evolution chain.

Other content

Besides the entries on each Pokémon, the book includes a Hoenn region map with a brief summary about the region. There are also Hoenn, Johto and Indigo League comparisons that compare Badges, amount needed etc. There are also a couple of pages in it to read up about Pokémon types, and other things that are new to Generation III.

Errors

  • On Torchic's page, Tentacool's moveset is listed instead of Torchic's.
  • On Ralts's page, it states Ralts can not evolve. This is not true, as Ralts can evolve into Kirlia.
  • It also said that Trapinch could not evolve.
  • On Ninjask's page it states that Ninjask evolves into Shedinja.
  • On Huntail's page it states that Huntail evolves into Gorebyss.
  • It also wrongly states Wurmple evolves to either Cascoon or Silcoon depending on the time of day.
  • Information on Ash incorrectly implies that Mudkip is one of Ash's Pokémon.
  • There are several minor spelling errors, such as in Beautifly's page Morning Sun is misspelled as Mornin, and in Milotic's page Water Gun is misspelled as Water Fun.
  • Quick Attack is sometimes wrongly shortened to just Quick.
  • Faint Attack is also sometimes shortened to just Faint.
  • There are few times where they join two moves together, such as in Surskit's and Masquerain's page Bubble and Quick Attack are joined to Bubble Quick, and in Swablu's and Altaria's page, Peck and Growl are joined into Peck Growl.
  • In Linoone's page it is stated as being able to learn the move Rushing, although this is the species name.
  • Medicham is listed as Medicharm.
  • Metang is listed as Matang.
