The Pokémon Newspaper Strip was a short-lived daily comic strip run in American newspapers at the height of the Pokémon franchise's early popularity. The comics are written by Gerard Jones and illustrated by Ashura Benimaru.

It was completely an American project, in art and writing. It was chiefly a gag comic.
While loosely based on the Pokémon anime, it was primarily a gag comic.
It started syndication on September 10th, 2000 and ran for a little over a year. During this time, the strip faced criticism from some that claimed the art and writing were terrible, and that the strip contained many instances that break canon with the anime. However, most readers enjoyed the strip throughout its short run.

It wasn't very popular, and was often highly criticized.  The art was terrible and unprofessional, with characters (Pokémon and humans) often looking deformed, badly shaded, and poorly proportioned.
The comics can be found in a collection entitled "Pikachu Meets the Press."

In addition, although it was loosely based on the Pokémon anime, the writing in the strip often seemed to indicate that the creators behind the project had little to no idea about the franchise they were even supposed to be writing about. One of the early infamous strips showed Misty taking her Squirtle to a school that both she and Ash attended.
