Pokémon GO Plus +

The Pokémon GO Plus + (Japanese: Pokémon GO Plus +) is a peripheral for use with Pokémon GO and Pokémon Sleep. It functions similarly to the Pokémon GO Plus, but with the added functionality of tracking time spent sleeping to affect gameplay in Pokémon Sleep. It was released in Japan, the Americas, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan on July 14, 2023, and in Europe on July 21, 2023.

Functionality

Using the Pokémon GO Plus +

The Pokémon GO Plus + package includes the device, a strap with clip, and a USB Type-C charging cable. The device itself has a central main button which can light up to indicate certain states of play, and a top button. It communicates with the player's smart device via Bluetooth connection, and is rechargable via USB Type-C port.

The top button of the Pokémon GO Plus + has an LED light which indicates battery power when pressed. The LED light indicators are as follows:^[2]

• Blinking red: Low
• Yellow (blinks twice): Greatly reduced
• Yellow (blinks once): Slightly reduced
• Steady green: Mostly charged

The Pokémon GO Plus + is used with Pokémon GO and Pokémon Sleep.

Pokémon Sleep

The Pokémon GO Plus + links with Pokémon Sleep to track the player's sleep in place of their smart device. To activate sleep tracking, the Pokémon GO Plus + is placed on the player's mattress beside their pillow, then it is activated by pressing and holding the main button. The Pokémon GO Plus + must be laid flat in order to activate sleep tracking; if successful, its main button will light up blue, and if not, it will glow red.^[3]

When the player wakes up, the main button is pressed and held once again to finish tracking the player's sleep. A minimum of 90 minutes of sleep is needed for the sleep session to be considered valid; otherwise, the main button will glow red when pressed, indicating the sleep session was invalid. When the Pokémon Sleep software is opened, it will automatically connect to and read data recorded by the paired Pokémon GO Plus +; this can also be done manually by pressing the "GO Plus +" option on the Pokémon Sleep menu.^[3]

The Pokémon GO Plus + includes sound functionality, with sounds of Pikachu stored in the device. The Pikachu sounds include lullabies to help the player sleep at night, and alarms to wake the player up in the morning. With frequent use of the device, more sounds for the Pikachu will be unlocked. Sounds, alarms, and other settings of the Pokémon GO Plus + can be toggled on or off from the Pokémon Sleep settings. The Pokémon GO Plus + can also be put on silent mode (turning off all the Pikachu sounds), by holding down both the top and main buttons for at least one second.^[3]

Pairing the Pokémon GO Plus + with Pokémon Sleep will reward the player with a special helper Pikachu wearing a nightcap. This nightcap-wearing Pikachu does not count towards the limit of five Helper Pokémon in Pokémon Sleep, meaning the player will have a total of six Helper Pokémon. When it is also paired with Pokémon GO, it allows the player to receive bonus Berries from the nightcap-wearing Pikachu in accordance with the player's Pokémon GO data.^[3]

Pokémon GO

When the Pokémon GO Plus + is in active use, the player may continue to experience gameplay elements of Pokémon GO even if they place their device in sleep mode and store it in a place like a pocket or in their handbag. The Pokémon GO app must still be open and running in the background of the player's device to use the Pokémon GO Plus +. The Pokémon GO Plus + can be used to automatically throw Poké Balls and spin PokéStops and Gyms. The device will vibrate when detecting a nearby Pokémon, PokéStop, or Gym.^[4]

Unlike the Pokémon GO Plus, which only works with regular Poké Balls, the Pokémon GO Plus + also works with Great Balls and Ultra Balls. However, only regular Poké Balls can be thrown automatically; throwing Great Balls or Ultra Balls requires the player to manually press the Pokémon GO Plus +'s main button. The type of Poké Ball used for manual throwing can be selected from the Pokémon GO settings.^[4]

The Pokémon GO Plus + will let out a Pikachu cry when connecting or disconnecting with the Pokémon GO app. It will also let out the Pikachu cry when encountering a Pokémon the player has never encountered before. The Pikachu cries can be toggled on or off from the Pokémon GO settings or by putting the Pokémon GO Plus + in silent mode.^[4]

Pairing the Pokémon GO Plus + with Pokémon GO will grant the player a Special Research that rewards Snorlax wearing a nightcap. When it is also paired with Pokémon Sleep, it allows the player to receive bonuses in Pokémon GO in accordance to the player's sleep data, such as Stardust, items, and hearts for the player's Buddy Pokémon.^[4]

Development

The Pokémon GO Plus + was announced at the Pokémon 2019 Press Conference on May 29, 2019 to be released in 2020 alongside Pokémon Sleep; however, this did not occur, and no further information about the peripheral was announced until 2023. During Pokémon Presents on February 27, 2023, it was announced that it would be released in Japan, the Americas, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan on July 14, 2023, and in Europe on July 21, 2023.
