Seeing they have identical appearances, Salvia and Dawn switches places so that the former can participate in a Pokémon Contest. Using Togekiss, Salvia performs very well in the initial round. She also uses Togekiss in the final round against Jessie's Seviper. She managed to win the match, and thus, the Contest. Salvia later gives Togekiss to Dawn so that she can fulfill her dream of participating in Contests.
Togekiss originally belonged to Princess Salvia, a doppelgänger of Dawn, who wished to compete in a Pokémon Contest to see what it was like. As the two had a near-identical appearance, they switched lives for a time, with Dawn secretly becoming Salvia, and Salvia, dressed as Dawn, using Togekiss in the Katakori Town contest. Doing very well for her first contest, Salvia managed to win the ribbon from the contest, but gave it to her opponent, Jessalina, instead, as Dawn already had the required ribbons for entry into the Grand Festival. To allow it to continue competing in contests, Salvia gave Togekiss to Dawn.

In DP172, Dawn decided to start training Togekiss for the upcoming Grand Festival, when she became fast friends with Dawn. During training, Togekiss was used in battle against Gible and although the two were evenly matched the battle was stopped when Togekiss shielded Piplup from Gible's still-unreliable Draco Meteor. Togekiss then talked to Gible, warning him to be more careful with his moves causing Gible to show regret for his carelessness. Although Dawn was initially upset with Togekiss for constantly using graceful moves in battle, she eventually realized that she had to adjust to Togekiss' battle style rather than make Togekiss adapt to hers. She later used this when battling Jessie and her Jessie, who was looking for revenge against Dawn for her defeat in the Katakori Contest (although Dawn wasn't aware of this as she is still unaware that Jessie is also Jessilina). After a hard-fought battle, Togekiss' grace eventually won through and Yanmega was defeated.
In DP172, Dawn began training Togekiss for the Grand Festival, during which she became fast friends with Dawn. Ash volunteered to used Gible against Togekiss for a training match, and while the two were evenly-matched, Togekiss shielded Piplup from Gible's still unreliable Draco Meteor. Togekiss talked with Gible shortly, warning him to be more careful with his moves, making him regret his past carelessness and begin change his ways.

Dawn initially was upset with Togekiss, as she only would use graceful moves in battle, but realized quickly that instead of Togekiss changing to suit Dawn, Dawn should instead change her strategy to suit Togekiss's strengths. Dawn's Togekiss (Japanese: ヒカリのトゲキッス Hikari's Togekiss) is the eighth Pokémon obtained by Dawn. She is voiced by 井上喜久子 Kikuko Inoue in Japanese.

In DP172, Dawn began training Togekiss for the Grand Festival, during which she became fast friends with Piplup.

This new strategy was later used to win against Jessie and Yanmega, who were looking for revenge on Dawn and Togekiss for their defeat in the contest.
