The Base Set Chansey distinguishes itself as one of the most odd (and possibly overlooked) powerhouses of the first wave of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.  Its unique statistics and movepool help it serve many different roles while in play.  It is a holographic card and is number 3 out of 102 due to the alphabetical numbering of trading card sets--behind only Alakazam and Blastoise.

Dammage Sponge Chansey
Chansey quickly distinguished itself from other Pokémon in the set as the only card with a Hit Point count greater than 100 (the other was Charizard).  Players typically choose Chansey as a dammage sponge due to this health advantage over all other basic Pokémon cards.  Scrunch is handy for buying time until stronger, more potent Pokémon come into play.  Chansey has been known to stay active in this way for upwards of 20 rounds while defenders slowly whittle its health away in between Scrunches.  However, Haymaker decks, with their focus on Hitmonchan's speed, are known to easily outrun Chansey due to its weakness to the Fighting type.

"One Kill Thrill" Chansey
Project TCG notice
Chansey's powerful Double Edge attack is often a major selling-point of the card.  A fully powered Chansey could deal out 80 dammage in a single turn--an automatic KO in most situations and an easy way for players to earn an easy prize.  However, due to the additional effect of the attack that Chansey does an identical amount of dammage to itself, Chansey players often find themselves in trouble the following turn.  With 80 of its 120 health gone, Chansey players find that most of the time, a fully powered opposing pokemon is brought into play to One-Hit the Chansey for a kill.  This is because it takes no less than two turns (four if the player has no Double Colorless Energy)to attach the energy necessary for one attack on a Chansey.  This gives defenders ample time to prepare a counterattack--or even to promote a stronger pokemon to the active slot in order to stop players from using the Chansey in the first place.  Even if a player survives the following attack on a "One Kill Thrill Chansey", he or she will only be able to attack once more unless enough dammage is removed to ensure that Chansey does not KO itself.

Assassin Chansusaur
The most rarely utilized, but effective use for Chansey in battle is as a Quick Assassin.  This method was popularized by Benjamin Scaralia in his "Energy Assassin" deck.  The method involves using Venusaur's Pokemon Power: Energy Trans and several scoop up and pokémon center cards.  Using this, players may move one grass energy from one of their Pokémon in play to another as many times as they like before they attack.  The Energy Assassin deck revolves around continuously placing grass energy on Venusaur as long as grass energy are in the player's hand, but keeping Venusaur benched.  As soon as the opportunity to strike presents itself, the player must bench Chansey, move four grass energy to it, then promote it to the active slot to attack.  This not only deals 80 dammage in one turn like the "One Kill Thrill Chansey", but it stops opponents from being able to counter effectively since there was no warning.  Players deal 80 dammage out of nowhere and defenders often find themselves in trouble.  The following turn, Chansey has the ability to be fully healed by transfering the energy in play to an undammaged Pokémon, using Pokémon Center to remove all dammage counters from all pokemon in play, then re-attaching the energy to Chansey.  Pokémon center requires players to discard all energy cards attached to pokémon who are healed, but Venusaur's energy trans power allows players to avoid discarding energy so long as they are attatched to a pokémon who is not dammaged (usually Venusaur).  Scoop up works well if players sense that Chansey is in trouble--Venusaur transfers energy from Chansey and avoids discarding once again.

This deck's major enemy is the Haymaker deck, which deals double dammage with Hitmonchan and also makes it very difficult for players to progress the game to the point that Venusaur is in play.
