Bugsy (Japanese: ツクシ Tsukushi) is the Gym Leader of Azalea Town. He trains Bug-type Pokémon, and hands out the Hivebadge to trainers who defeat him. His English name is a clear reference to the word "bug". His French name is "Hector", derived from the French word "insecte" (insect). His German name, "Kai", refers to "Käfer", which means "coleopter". His Italian name is "Raffaello", which is almost an anagram of "farfalla", the Italian word for "butterfly". "Anton", his Spanish name, could derive from the greek prefix "entomo", which means "insect". His Japanese name, "Tsukushi", could be a corruption of "matsukuimushi", a general term for insects harmful to pine trees, or of "tsutsugamushi" a kind of mite. Anyhow, "mushi" means "insect".

In the Anime

Bugsy trains in a large, greenhouse-like Gym filled with trees and bugs.

His Scyther can use Swords Dance to deflect Fire-type attacks. However, Ash figured out it was vulnerable from above, and Cyndaquil was able to knock it out, winning Ash the Hivebadge.

In the Games

Bugsy's title is "The Walking Bug Pokémon Encyclopedia".

Because of his research on bug Pokémon, Bugsy's knowledge makes him an authority on them. He claims to never lose when it comes to bug Pokémon, but admits his research isn't finished upon a loss.

Although still young, Bugsy discovered the move Fury Cutter, which gets stronger as a battle goes longer.
