104 to Rustboro City
Route 104 is the last route before Rustboro City. It holds Petalburg Woods, which is similar to Viridian Forest in Kanto. It also holds Mr. Briney's house, which will be important later. In the woods, the player encounters a Devon worker looking for Shroomish when a Team Aqua(Sapphire) or Team Magma (Ruby) Grunt assaults him. The player will then battle the Grunt, who will run away while swearing revenge. The worker will give the player their first Great Ball. He will then realize what is happening and will run to Rustboro City. The player can then advance to the end of the woods. The last stretch to Rustboro City has: a flower shop, two trainers, a double battle, a Fisherman, and Berries.

Rustboro City has various points of interest: the Cutter's house, in which he gives the player HM01 Cut, the Devon Corporation building, the Pokémon Trainer's School, and of course, the Gym. The Gym in Rustboro City uses Rock Pokémon.

Roxanne is the Gym Leader here. She graduated with top marks from the Pokémon Trainer's School.

Defeating Roxanne should be easy with starter pokémon Treecko or Mudkip. Alternatively, Shroomish can be used by those who chose Torchic as a starter.
After defeating Roxanne, you should head towards the Devon Corporation building. Just before you go through the fence, the Grunt from Petalburg Woods runs out of the building, knocks you down, and runs off the top of the screen. He is followed by the Devon Worker.

After Rustboro City, there are two paths the player can take, Route 115 or Route 116. The player cannot Surf yet so Route 115 cannot be used. On the north-eastern edge of the city the Devon worker will tell the player that the Grunt has run to incomplete Rusturf Tunnel, part of Route 116.
Route 116 to Dewford Town
On Route 116, a great place to catch Skitty, the player will have to head a short distance east to the tunnel. At the entrance of the tunnel, Mr. Briney will tell the player that his Peeko has been taken. Once inside, it is seen that the Grunt is holding a Wingull captive. The player will battle the Grunt once again, and when he is defeated it is realized that the Wingull is Mr. Briney's Peeko. Mr. Briney then invites the player to his house and leaves. Afterwards, the President of Devon Corporation will express his gratitude with a PokéNav, and will then ask the player to deliver a parcel to Steven Stone, who is in Dewford Town.

After rescuing Mr. Briney's Peeko, the player should head to Mr. Briney's cottage on Route 104, where he will offer to sail the player to Dewford Town, the location of Steven Stone and the second Gym Badge. The sail covers Route 105, Route 106, and Route 107. The player will then arrive at Dewford Town. The first priority should be to deliver the parcel to Steven Stone, who is in Granite Cave. However the player can also challenge the Gym to gain the ability to use HM05 Flash. It should be noted that some floors of Granite Cave are dark.
Dewford Gym

Although Dewford Gym is dark like a cave, HM05 cannot be used yet because the player has not acquired the Fist Badge, given out at Dewford Gym.

If the player chose Torchic as a starter, the player can take advantage of super-effective Pecks here. If the player chose Mudkip or Treecko, Taillow and Ralts provide a decent alternative.
Badge 3: Dewford Town to Mauville City
After the player has gone to Dewford City and defeated the Gym and delivered the parcel to Steven in Granite Cave, the player should go back to Rustboro City and get the PokéNav from the president of the Devon Corp. After that, the player should go to Slateport City.
Route 109
In Route 109, the player will find numerous trainers and the Seashore House, a shop to buy Soda Pop.
Slateport City
In Slateport City, there is the Slateport Market, Captain Stern's Shipyard, the Oceanic Museum, Pokémon Fan Club, Name Rater's House, Slateport Harbor, and the Pokémon Contest-Hyper Rank. In the Slateport Market, one can buy an Azurill doll, Marill doll, and Skitty doll, each for 3000 Poké, TM10, and TM43, each for 3000 Poké. Also after buying TM43, a vendor at the northern end of the Market will sell the player extra items. The Contest Hall cannot be used yet because the player has not won any Normal Rank or Super Rank Contest. Team Aqua is blocking the entrance to the Oceanic Museum and will not go away until the player goes north of the city and returns. The player should then enter the museum (there is a 50 Poké entrance fee) and proceed up the stairs, where the player will find Captain Stern. However, shortly after the encounter, two Team Aqua or Magma Grunts will enter and battle the player, back-to-back. When the two Grunts are defeated, the Team Leader appears and promises the player that his plan is not to be stopped by a child.
Route 110
Before, when the player first went north of the city, many Grunts were blocking the road. Now they are gone and the player can proceed.

Littleroot Town

You awaken in the back of a moving truck in Littleroot Town, since your family has just moved here from Johto. Hop out of the truck, and enter your house. Once inside, go upstairs to your room and set your clock. Turn on your PC, and withdraw the single Potion for later. Go back downstairs, and after just missing your dad on the TV, Mom tells you that you should visit your new neighbor, Prof. Birch. Birch isn't home, but visit his daughter May ( players) / son Brendan ( players) upstairs. Birch isn't in his lab either, so head north to Route 101.

Route 101

Choose your starter wisely!

Setting foot on Route 101, you'll see the professor being attacked by a wild Poochyena. He tells you to select one of the Pokémon in the bag on the ground. Choose wisely, because this creature will become your Starter Pokémon!
These Pokémon include:
Treecko
 Grass-type
252

Like Bulbasaur and Chikorita, Treecko is strong against Rock-, Ground-, and Template:Type2s, and is weak against Fire- and Template:Type2s. Treecko maintains its sole Grass-type throughout its evolutions. Being a Grass-type, it will also have an advantage against the first Gym.

Torchic
 Fire-type
255

Successor to Charmander and Cyndaquil, Torchic has an advantage against Grass-, Bug-, and Template:Type2s, but falters when battling Water-, Ground-, and Rock-types. Torchic also gains a secondary Fighting-type by its final form. As a Fire-type, it will have a disadvantage against the first Gym.

Mudkip
 Water-type
258

Hoenn's version of Squirtle and Totodile, Mudkip does well against Fire-, Rock-, and Template:Type2s, while struggling against Grass- and Template:Type2s. Mudkip eventually adds a secondary Ground-type by its final form, which defends it from Electric-type attacks.

Once you choose a Pokémon, the Poochyena will attack you. After defeating it, Birch will take you to his lab, and ask you to visit his child on Route 103, north of Oldale Town.

Head north to Route 103.

Oldale Town

Oldale Town

Speak to the Poké Mart employee to get a free Potion, and continue north to Route 103.

Route 103

Rival battle

For now, your rival will only have one Pokémon; what species it is depends on which Pokémon you chose from Birch's bag. Like past games, your rival will have the Pokémon with a type advantage against yours. Since both Pokémon are still young, neither knows an attack of their own type yet, so your rival doesn't have much of an advantage just yet. After defeating them, your rival will head back south to Littleroot.

Littleroot Town

After following Birch's kid back to the lab, Birch will give you the Pokédex, and his kid will give you 5 Poké Balls. On your way out of town, your mom will give you a pair of Running Shoes. By holding down the B-Button, you can run twice as fast as the normal walking speed.

Get back to Oldale Town, and head west to Route 102.

Route 102

Battle past the handful of Pokémon Trainers to earn vital experience and money, and don't miss the Potion to the south of Lass Tiana.
Continue west to Petalburg City.

Petalburg City

After visiting the city's Gym, you'll learn that your father will not accept your challenge until you have earned four other Gym badges. Instead, he asks you to help Wally, a resident of Petalburg, catch his first Pokémon. After Norman lends him his Zigzagoon and a Poké Ball, you follow Wally to Route 102, where he successfully catches a Ralts.

After Wally leaves, you're free to head west to Route 104.
