This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Red and Blue Versions. This walkthrough follows the original Game Boy version, not Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. The guide for those can be found here.

Route 1

Encountering a wild Rattata

Talk to the first person you see on the way to Viridian City. The guy is an employee at the Poké Mart there, and he'll give you a free Potion.

There are only two wild Pokémon species that can be found on Route 1: Pidgey and Rattata. Walk around in the tall grass and you will eventually find them. Train by fighting them and gaining experience.

If your Pokémon is almost out of HP, return to Pallet Town and talk to Mom, or head to Viridian City and use the Pokémon Center. You should have trained to get to at least level 8 by the time you get to Viridian City. This boring training will pay off, as it will make it easier to fight trainers later.

Viridian City

Here's how to heal your Pokémon.

Now you can explore Viridian City, though there is not much to do here yet. As soon as you enter the city, you should see a Pokémon Center. This is a place where you can heal your Pokémon back to full health. Using a Pokémon Center is simple, just walk up to the woman at the counter and press A. She'll ask you if you want your Pokémon healed, just select HEAL. At the east side of the Pokémon Center, you can use the PC to store Pokémon and items. There are three people in this Pokémon Center, none of whom do anything worthwhile, besides give you tips.

If you go far to the north, there will be an old man laying in the street and a girl standing next to him. If you try to pass, he will tell you you can't. There's nothing of interest in the house to the east of them, just a man and his daughter who don't do anything important. To the south of that house is a Pokémon Trainer School that has only one student; she is reading a notebook that you can read too. The book gives some tips about how to play the game. Southeast of the School is a Poké Mart. You need to stop in here to move on.

The man at the counter gives you an Parcel to give to Professor Oak.

When you enter the Poké Mart, the man at the counter immediately asks you if you're from Pallet Town. He then tells you to deliver a package to Professor Oak. This package doesn't do anything for you, so you just have to deliver it. He won't let you buy anything from the Mart either, until you deliver the Parcel. And so, you have to head back to Pallet Town.

Delivering Oak's Parcel

Upon delivering the Parcel to Professor Oak, your rival returns to the lab. Oak then gives you each a Pokédex, which you will use to (hopefully) record the data of every Pokémon in existence! Apparently, this was Professor Oak's quest when he was younger. After receiving the Pokédex, your rival will jeer that he doesn't need your help to complete his Pokédex, and that he'll get a Town Map from his sister and tell her not to give you one. Despite his clever plan, you can just head on over to his house and his sister will give you one anyway.

Finally Catching Pokémon

Now head back up to Viridian City and, what the heck, why not train a bit more? Try to get to level 10 for now.

Once back in the city, head to the Poké Mart and buy 5 Poké Balls. Now head north and you'll notice that the old man blocking the road before has now "had his coffee" and "feels great!" If you tell him that you're not in a hurry, he will show you how to capture a Pokémon.

Head back south to the nearest patch of tall grass and catch a Pidgey and a Rattata if you haven't already. Raise them both to the same level as your starter Pokémon by training them against other wild Pokémon, just like you did before.

If you go west of Viridian, you'll be on Route 22, where you can capture Rattata, Spearow, Nidoran♂ and Nidoran♀. If you catch all these, you should have six pages of your Pokédex filled. Not a bad start! You're well on your way to having a great Pokémon adventure!

Battle: Rival (again!)

Your party should be about level 10 before moving on.

Here you run into the rival, who will challenge you again.

Further along Route 22, you'll find your rival. This battle won't be very hard if you've got at least two party members that are level 10 or higher. You don't have to challenge him here yet, but you will have to eventually.

If you chose Charmander: Template:PartyHeader Template:PartyBody12 Template:PartyFooter

If you chose Squirtle: Template:PartyHeader Template:PartyBody12 Template:PartyFooter

After the battle, heal your Pokémon and then buy some more Poké Balls. You've probably used all five that you had, as you could catch 5 new Pokémon. If you want to, you can try to get every Pokémon as a side quest. It's always a good idea to improve your Pokédex.

Route 2

Now head north past the old man who had his coffee and you'll be on Route 2. There's only one patch of tall grass here. These Pokémon should be about the same as the ones on Route 1, though now you can find Caterpie, Metapod, Weedle, Kakuna, and Pikachu. You can't do anything interesting on this Route yet because you don't have HM01 (Cut) - which will be very important and useful later. You see those weird-shaped trees blocking the east side of Route 2? Those are trees that can be cut once you beat Misty in the Cerulean City Gym.

Now go north through that guardhouse and you'll be in Viridian Forest - a whole new area with new Pokémon to catch!
