Dawn's Cyndaquil (Japanese: ヒカリのヒノアラシ Hikari's Hinoarashi) is the seventh Pokémon obtained by Dawn.

Piplup and Cyndaquil showing their rivalry

In DP143, Dawn battled Kotone in the Johto Festa and defeated her. As a prize, Dawn was given an egg, which was soon abducted by Team Rocket. While it was in Team Rocket's possession, it showed signs of hatching. When Dawn finally got it back, it hatched right in front of her eyes, revealing it to be a Cyndaquil.

Dawn's Piplup appears to be jealous over the attention that Cyndaquil gets, though this may be attributed to the fact that Cyndaquil wasn't very responsive to Piplup at first. Piplup often attacks Cyndaquil and it in turn fights back, causing frequent squabbles between the two. They seem to be trying to compete for superiority over the other.

In DP144, it battled Ash's Grotle and proved to be a strong opponent even though it had just hatched.

In DP146, it showed its interest in Contests after watching Dawn practice with her Mamoswine by trying to mimic it with the flames on its back.

Trivia

  • Of all Pokémon eggs owned by main characters, Cyndaquil took the least amount of time to hatch, hatching in the same episode it was obtained in.
  • Dawn is the second main character to own a Cyndaquil, the first being Ash.
  • Like May's Bulbasaur, Cyndaquil is a starter Pokémon from the region alternate to her own in her generation that has a type disadvantage against her actual starter.
  • Similar to May getting her Bulbasaur, Dawn also got a starter Pokémon from the game region that was featured in the most recent game. May got Bulbasaur a few months after Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen's release, while Dawn got Cyndaquil five days after the release of Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
Cyndaquil showing affection
  • Cyndaquil is the eighth Pokémon to follow the pattern of premiering in a movie and then being captured by one of the main characters. In all cases, the premiered Pokémon is not the same character as the one caught, just the same species. Dawn's Cyndaquil comes after Arceus and the Jewel of Life. This is only a technical premiere, as Cyndaquil was featured during the original Johto series as well.
  • Cyndaquil is Dawn's first Generation II Pokémon which is not able to evolve into a Generation IV Pokémon.
  • Cyndaquil is the third Pokémon species that both Dawn and Ash share. The first two are Aipom and Buizel (this of course was due to the trade that occurred), and the first that isn't the same exact Pokémon.
  • Cyndaquil is the only one of Dawn's Pokémon that hasn't participated in a Pokémon Contest yet, however this may because it just hatched from an egg.
  • Cyndaquil may be a end up like May's Venusaur, as Ash has had both a Bulbasaur and Cyndaquil and Ash's and Dawn's Cyndaquils will eventually meet at professor Oak's Lab and get along well, which may Lead to Dawn leaving to another region and reuniting with Ash with Cyndaquil evolved into a Typhlosion, just like May's Venusaur.
