Hank, along with many other villagers, were competing in a contest to see who the next king would be; whoever had the crown in their hands by sunset would be the king for a year. However, because of interference by Ash's Aipom, Hank decided to help Ash in order to find Aipom and the crown that she had stolen.
Even though Hank often had great ideas, such as using his Nosepass to navigate through the mountains, he had a problem with speaking his mind at times. Later, when they found Aipom with the crown stuck on her head, Hank came up with another idea, which involved feeding Aipom a sour Belue Berry in order to get the crown off. By sunset, he was the one with the crown in his hands and was named King for a Year. Ash said that he should have no problem being king because he always came up with great plans.
