In the 2nd episode of the anime Ash's mom mentioned his father. There have been a lot of sugjestions as to who is As's father. One of the suspected fathers is Giovanni, the leader of team rocket. This theory was disproved when Heart Gold and Soul Silver were released and it was revealed the Giovanni was in fact Silver's father.
The other suspected father is Prof. Oak. There is no information that states Prof. Oak would be his father. However he is the grandfather of Gary Oak, Ash's rival.
