Only Heal Move?
The trivia section says that Present is the only move that heals the opponent. Isn't it true that Pain Split also heals the opponent? Just clarifying before I change it. --TraverseTown 17:41, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

Present's glitchiness in G/S
I found an FAQ on GameFAQs that says that Present is glitched in Pokémon Gold and Silver, and only those two games (not even Crystal or Stadium 2 have the glitch). Basically, many of the variables are messed up when using Present, and the damage is largely dependent on the user's and opponent's types. While it uses this damage formula, the variables are different. Basically:
- Attack will always be 10.
- Level will be the index number of the opponent's second type (or solo type if it only has one):
- Defense becomes the index number of the user's second type (or its solo type if it only has one).
- Present is 1/4x effective against Rock and Steel instead of 1/2x effective.
Shouldn't this be mentioned in the article? I'm surprised it isn't already... Blaziken257 18:41, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

I don't understand this bit, sorry if I'm being dense...
For the generation III description of Present, the information given on this page is as follows: "Present uses the standard damage formula. Present heals the foe by 1/4 of its max HP, instead of only 80. Move will fail if it would heal Pokémon with full HP."
I understand the bit about the HP, but what I was wanting to find out is how much damage (or power) it will do when it hits the foe, and how often it will do damage compared to how often it will heal. Similar to the information about generation II I guess. But all it says for gen III is "Present uses the standard damage formula." I looked all over the page for a "standard damage formula" but couldn't find one. I tried typing it into the search box but just got directed back to this page. I tried clicking the link "damage formula" in the gen II section but that wasn't helpful either. Am I completely missing something?? Is this supposedly common knowledge?
Anyway I think that to improve this page, either someone should explain what the "standard damage formula" is on the page somewhere or provide a helpful link to it, or just simply explain the information for gen III clearly in a table like the gen II section. Or if it's the same, then it should say that the damage calculation is the same as gen II, but with the following changes: ...
All I wanted to know was whether to teach Present as an egg move for something I was breeding anyway, but I won't bother with the hassle if it's rubbish. "A gift in the form of a bomb. May restore HP. Power: varies" isn't good enough for me to make a decision, I mean if the power varies from 80 to 100 maybe it would be worth it, whereas if the power varies between 40 and 60, then it wouldn't be worth it. - It means that the damage format follows what was introduced with the move in Gen II. 40% chance of a base power of 40, 30% change of a base power of 80, 10% chance of a base power of 120. The only difference between Gen II and III (and beyond) is the healing factor changed from 20% chance of an 80HP heal, to a 20% chance of healing 25% of the target's HP. - Kogoro - Talk to me - 07:35, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for explaining :) although I don't understand why it doesn't just say "Present maintained the damage formula for generation II" then? I can't be the only person who thinks that using a term like "standard" where there is no clear reference point is confusing ... ? I guess I figure that if it's not clear to me then perhaps young people or people whose first language isn't English might not understand. Lol but then perhaps it's just me being hopelessly literal! Possible new trivia point? Odds of the move healing
When I first heard of this move as a child, I wondered how effective this move would act as a healing move in double battles to heal your allies. Now, as an older individual, I decided to do the math out and found there being an 18% chance for the move to heal 80 HP. What do you all think about adding a trivia bullet saying something like
"If one were to try and use this as a healing move to aid your own Pokemon in a double battle, there would be an 18% chance of healing 80 HP."
Thoughts? Thanks for considering my idea guys, its my first time posting on a talk page :)
