The Power Plant (Japanese: むじんはつでんしょ Unmanned Power Plant; はつでんしょ Power Plant in Generations II and IV) is a facility located on Route 10 in Kanto that was abandoned years before the Generation I games, though some of the machinery still works. It was refurbished at some time between Generation I and Generation II to provide power for the Magnet Train. It became a home for Electric-type Pokémon when it was abandoned. Surfing from Route 9 is required to reach it.

Many item balls located inside of the Power Plant are actually Voltorb or Electrode, making it somewhat hazardous to look for treasure here.

The Power Plant is the only known roost of the legendary Pokémon, Zapdos. In Generation I and the Generation III remakes, it will be inside the Power Plant and catchable as soon as the player is able to use Surf outside of battle. In Generation II, it is no longer there. In the Generation IV remakes, however, It will appear outside the Power Plant after the all the Kanto and Johto badges are obtained.

Differences between generations

In Generations I and III, the Power Plant is littered with machinery that has fallen into disrepair. Many of the changes between these two generations are simply cosmetic, due to Generation III featuring the remakes of Red and Blue.

In Generation II, the inside is reduced drastically, and is taken up by scientists working at various computers, as well as a separate generator room. The wild Pokémon here in Generations I and III instead reside outside, while Zapdos has apparently fled.

In Generation IV, the inside is redesigned yet again to be a single room, with the generator in the middle and the scientists at their computers spread around the room. Wild Pokémon again reside outside, including Zapdos, which returns after the Machine Part is restored.

Trivia

• Grimer and Muk can be found here in Pokémon Yellow, a direct reference to the anime episode Sparks Fly for Magnemite, where Grimer and Muk take over a power plant in Gringey City.
