Foreign Pokédex entries

From Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Meister)
Jump to: navigation, search

Foreign Pokédex entries are a feature introduced in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, the first Pokémon games to officially support trading between languages. Originally limited to a select group of Pokémon, multilingual Pokédex entries are now accessible for every Pokémon in seven different languages.

Pokémon with foreign Pokédex entries

In Generation IV

The Meister (Japanese: マイスター Meister) is a character in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum who upgrades the player's Pokédex with the ability to store entries in foreign languages. He lives in a small house on an island on Route 226. His sprite is the same as the Hiker Trainer class.

After he upgrades a player's Pokédex, he offers to trade the player a German Magikarp in exchange for a Finneon. This adds Magikarp's German entry to the player's Pokédex.

In the German-language versions of the games, the Meister will trade an English Magikarp. His name in these games is English in origin: The Master.

Diamond and Pearl

In Diamond and Pearl, fourteen Pokémon can have foreign Pokédex entries registered. The entries come from the LeafGreen Version of the language in question when said Pokémon is received from a foreign game.

Platinum

In Pokémon Platinum, Meister's upgrade instead allows the player to record foreign Pokédex entries for all 493 Pokémon. These entries are the ones used in that language's version of Diamond.

HeartGold and SoulSilver

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the foreign Pokédex entries are the same as in Platinum. Unlike the previous games, the ability to collect foreign Pokédex entries is available from the start.

In Generation V

In Black, White, Black 2, and White 2, the foreign Pokédex entries are also the same as in Platinum, just like native entries. However, only non-Unova Pokémon receive foreign Pokédex entries. For Black and White this is likely because foreign entries and names of Unova Pokémon had not been finalized yet at the time of the Japanese release of Black and White. However it is unknown why they were not included for Black 2 and White 2 as foreign Pokédex entries for Unova Pokémon would have been available from international releases of Black and White. The player is now able to collect Korean entries.

Generation VI onward

Every Pokémon now has collectible foreign entries in all seven of the game's languages, due to the simultaneous international release.

Trivia

  • It is not possible to collect any foreign Pokédex entries of any Generation IV Pokémon in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl even though this feature of the Pokémon games debuted in those games. This may be due to the entries not having been translated into other languages yet. This is addressed in Pokémon Platinum, where foreign Pokédex entries for all Pokémon are present, and are also present in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver and Pokémon Black and White.
  • A GTS event in 2007 involved foreign Pokémon, allowing players to trade an American Ponyta for a Japanese Psyduck and a Japanese Roselia for an American Heracross.
  • It is possible to become stranded on the Meister's island after trading with him. If the traded Finneon was the only member of the player's party that could learn Surf, and no Pokémon in the player's party have Surf, Fly, or Teleport, the only ways to leave would be by fainting in a fishing battle to return to the last Pokémon Center or by levelling up "Foppa" (by fishing for battles or using Rare Candies) until it evolves and can learn Surf as a Gyarados. As it is possible to progress through the game fully without picking up any fishing rods and to reach the island without having any Poké Balls or Rare Candies, players can become stranded on the island until they restart their game or use a cheat code to leave.
  • The Meister's Trainer ID number is 53277.
  • It is possible that the reasons why any Pokémon traded from Korean language cartridges of the fourth generation games do not maintain their original names in their own languages once they are traded into the English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, or the Japanese versions is because none of these versions support any languages outside of the six given languages. This is also why they do not appear in the foreign language categories in the Pokédex. This was fixed in Generation V.
  • In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, the Meister's speech contains a French grammatical error; the words "Je suis desolee" should be "Je suis desolé".
