She and Pierre were trying to determine whether Sudowoodo is a Rock-type or a Grass-type. Eventually they learned that Sudowoodo is a Rock-type, and with the use of the move Mimic it's able to imitate moves not of its type.
It is highly likely that she and Pierre are based on Marie and Pierre Curie.
