Ingrain (Japanese: ねをはる Extend Roots) is a non-damaging Grass-type move introduced in Generation III.

Contents

Effect

The user plants roots in the ground, allowing it to restore 1/16th of the user's max HP between turns. This roots it firmly in place, preventing the user from escaping or switching out. Even Whirlwind, Roar, Dragon Tail, and Circle Throw cannot force the user to switch out. However, U-turn, Volt Switch, and Baton Pass may be used to leave battle. If Baton Pass is used by the Pokémon, the effect of Ingrain will be transferred, and will heal any Pokémon, regardless of type.

Ingrain causes the affected Pokémon to be firmly rooted to the ground, and therefore vulnerable to Ground-type moves, Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Arena Trap (though Ingrain prevents the Pokémon from switching out anyway) even if it is Flying-type or has Levitate. Ingrain also prevents the Pokémon from going airborne through the effects of Magnet Rise and Telekinesis, but does not prevent the Pokémon from using Fly, Bounce, Splash, Jump Kick, or Hi Jump Kick.
