The Trainer in the Trainer House will behave strangely. Instead of the correct name (of Cal or the name of the last player with whom the player activated Mystery Gift), the Trainer will have a name made of seemingly random characters (sometimes without a name, appearing only as (PKMNTRAINER) and will fight with a seemingly random party. If the Pokémon's level is 0, the game will freeze. If the Pokémon sent out is of a higher level, it can be battled but the screen might display "Waiting..." as if the player was in a linked battle. Once that the message "Waiting..." is displayed , the player is forced to restart the game. The game will often freeze at the end of the battle due to an invalid response from the opponent. Battling the Trainer twice in one day often either freezes the game or triggers the glitch dimension. The glitch Trainer may have Pokémon with glitch status ailments and Pokémon over level 100, and is very likely to have Pokémon with impossible movesets or Pokémon with a series of "?" instead of their name.

The Trainer House glitch is a glitch in Gold and Silver Versions that affects the Trainer in the Trainer House. It is caused by corrupted RAM for save data. It is not present in Crystal Version.

Causes

  • The player changes data by forcing an incorrectly terminated list.
    • Often after viewing or withdrawing an invalid Pokémon in the PC box as a consequence of turning the power off too early when changing boxes. The game does not finish defining the last Pokémon so the game uses the last recalled value, or 256 Pokémon hence it is likely that RAM data integral to the game engine is erroneously translated as Pokémon data instead. It is possible that the Trainer House roster is stored as Pokémon data here, so the game wrongly assumes it to be invalid and withdraws its Trainer House data from the wrong location.
  • Interruption of the Mystery Gift transfer process.
  • When the game's internal battery has run dry.

Effects

The Trainer in the Trainer House will behave strangely. Instead of the correct name (of Cal or the name of the last player with whom the player activated Mystery Gift), the Trainer will have a name made of seemingly random characters (sometimes without a name, appearing only as (PKMNTRAINER) and will fight with a seemingly random party. If the Pokémon's level is 0, the game will freeze. If the Pokémon sent out is of a higher level, it can be battled but the screen might display "Waiting..." as if the player was in a linked battle. Once the message "Waiting..." is displayed, the player is forced to restart the game.

It is rare that the Trainer House data is corrupted without corrupting other areas of the save.

Most commonly is the player's mailbox. If so, the list is not properly terminated and some of the earlier messages are signed with valid names such as that of the player's rival, MOM, or GREEN (a default character name remnant from the Japanese version). These will not freeze the game if read (although the messages themselves are invalid, often using data from the map tileset as a font) but it is more likely that later messages freeze the game or trigger a glitch dimension if read.

Another common problem is having an excessive amount of room decorations which may include glitch decorations placed directly into the PC.
