Generation VI
If an In-battle effect item is consumed, Symbiosis will activate and transfer an item to it after it switches out but before the replacement is sent out. Any item transferred in response to an Eject Button activating cannot be activated at this time.
If the ally of a Pokémon with Symbiosis consumes a Gem by using a move, Symbiosis activates immediately. If the item would normally affect the power of the triggering move, then the new item's effect will be applied immediately; if a consumable item (except another Gem) is received that can currently be activated, it will immediately do so. However, if a Plate or Drive is given to a Pokémon using Judgment or Techno Blast after it has consumed a Gem, the move's type will not change; likewise, if the Pokémon receives another Gem via Symbiosis due to consuming a Gem, it will not also consume the new Gem.

When the Pokémon that was switched out by the Eject Button is switched in again, until it is switched out, if its item is activated its effect will be applied twice. If the Pokémon's item is removed or moved to another Pokémon, the item behaves as normal (i.e. it only applies once).
In Generation VI, if an ally's Eject Button is consumed, Symbiosis will activate and transfer an item to that ally after it switches out but before its replacement is sent out. When this Pokémon has switched in again, the Pokémon's item will be affected by the Symbiosis Eject Button glitch, which causes certain items to apply their effect twice.
*Black Sludge will hurt or heal the holder twice per turn (the item activation animation will display each time).
*Sticky Barb will hurt the holder twice (the item activation animation will display each time).
*Life Orb will decrease the holder's HP twice.
*Leftovers will heal the holder four times (the item activation animation will display twice, once before applying, once after healing twice).
*Stat-stage boosting held items, such as the Weakness Policy and Salac Berry, will boost stats twice (the item activation animation will only display once).
*Damage-reducing Berries will quarter the damage instead of halving it (although the activation message will only be displayed once).

Some items are affected in entirely non-functional ways.
Generation VII
*The Quick Claw and Power Herb will display their activation messages twice.
If the ally of a Pokémon with Symbiosis consumes a Gem by using a move, Symbiosis does not activate until after the move is executed.
*The Air Balloon will display the floating message twice (but will only display the burst message once).

The Red Card, Eject Button, Berry Juice, Leppa Berry, HP-restoring Berries, and Status-restoring Berries are unaffected. The move Fling is also unaffected.
The Eject Button activating does not trigger Symbiosis.

Effect

In battle

Reason: What about Rusted Sword/Shield with Zacian or Zamazenta? Does Symbiosis activate during a Max Raid Battle?
You can discuss this on the talk page.

If a Pokémon with Symbiosis has a held item, immediately after an ally's item is consumed, the Pokémon with Symbiosis will pass its item to that ally. Symbiosis may pass an item to a non-adjacent ally in a Triple Battle.

Symbiosis triggers any time an ally Pokémon consumes its item, whether directly or through the use of Fling or Natural Gift. If a Pokémon eats another Pokémon's Berry with Bug Bite or Pluck and is not holding an item, its ally's Symbiosis will be triggered and give an item to the Pokémon that used that move. An Air Balloon popping will trigger Symbiosis. If multiple Pokémon on the same side of a Triple Battle or Horde Encounter have Symbiosis, then Symbiosis will trigger on the faster Pokémon (even while Trick Room is in effect).

Symbiosis will not trigger if an ally's item is moved to a different Pokémon (such as due to Thief or Symbiosis itself), destroyed by Incinerate, or knocked off by Knock Off.

If a damage-reducing Berry is consumed in response to an attack, Symbiosis will not activate until after the damage is received. If an item is consumed using Fling or Natural Gift, Symbiosis will not activate until after the move deals damage.

Symbiosis cannot transfer a Z-Crystal. It cannot transfer a Griseous Orb if either Pokémon is Giratina, a Plate if either Pokémon is Arceus, a memory if either Pokémon is Silvally, a Drive if either Pokémon is Genesect, a Mega Stone if either Pokémon can Mega Evolve using it, a Blue Orb if either Pokémon is Kyogre, a Red Orb if either Pokémon is Groudon, a Booster Energy if either Pokémon is a Paradox Pokémon (except Koraidon, Miraidon, Gouging Fire, Raging Bolt, Iron Boulder and Iron Crown), or a Mask (Cornerstone Mask, Hearthflame Mask or Wellspring Mask) if either Pokémon is Ogerpon.

Generation VI

Generation VII

If the ally of a Pokémon with Symbiosis consumes a Gem by using a move, Symbiosis does not activate until after the move is executed.

The Eject Button activating does not trigger Symbiosis.

Outside of battle

Symbiosis has no effect outside of battle.
