History

Orville as a fledgling

Orville first began his goal to fly to the sun when he saw a painting of a few Pidgey flying to it during his time as a fledgling. Wilbur decided to train Orville in doing so as the other Pidgey kept on eating. Orville struggled at first as he often kept landing on the ground. Later, Orville went hang-gliding with Wilbur and was able to fly perfectly after narrowly landing towards a whirlpool.

Orville officially first appeared in the episode when Ash and his friends reached Wilbur's house and Orville was on the rooftop of the house. During the nighttime, Meowth went to where Orville was and gave him a headset as Meowth overheard about his plan earlier of flying towards the sun. The next day, Orville began flying with Ash, his friends, Wilbur, and Team Rocket watching on their hot air-balloon. Along the way, Orville dealt with a flock of Spearow and a Fearow. Orville managed to dodge the Spearow successfully but he narrowly did so with Fearow since Pikachu's Thunderbolt prevented Fearow from getting any closer.

Wilbur and Orville

Orville arrived in outer space and continued flying towards the sun despite parts of his wings being covered in ice. As Orville arrived at his destination, he rapidly flew down and landed onto Team Rocket's balloon. Orville was given an oxygen mask because of his dire need for it. After Pikachu used Thunder Shock to get the oxygen mask to work, Orville woke up. When the group landed back down, Orville was recognized as a hero towards the other Pidgey. Later, Orville had a talk with Meowth where Meowth was telling him about how he should aim for the moon.

Personality and characteristics

Unlike the other Pidgey that inhabit the island, Orville is in very good shape, and is the only one who can fly. Orville had dreams of flying higher than any Pidgey before him. His Trainer, Wilbur, believed in Orville and wanted to help him succeed.

Orville striked up a friendship with Meowth as Meowth gave Orville a headset in order to communicate during the flight. Along with Ash, his friends and Team Rocket, Orville flew high into the sky. In fact, Orville flew so high, he almost died from loss of oxygen. Thanks to Pikachu's Thunder Shock and an oxygen mask, Orville survived and was proud of his dream now accomplished.

Trivia

  • Orville and Wilbur are named after the Wright brothers.
  • Orville's Japanese name is derived from Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon.
