The Nintendo DS is Nintendo's latest addition to their handheld line-up. It was released in November 21, 2004 in North America and Japan, and March 11, 2005 in Europe.

Like the Game Boy Advance, it received an updated, more compact design after a while, the Nintendo DS Lite, which has brighter screens and a casing and buttons more similar in design to the Wii. A second redesign, the Nintendo DSi, added more features for non-gamers, much like the smaller Game Boy Micro did. Some features of the DS include:

  • Two screens, one of which is touch-sensitive
  • Audio reception and perception
  • Built in wireless connection via WiFi
  • Backwards compatibility with Game Boy Advance games (though multiplayer functions for GBA games are not supported).

Reports of the DS erasing saved files in GBA cartridges have been put on some sites.
