This Pokémon spent 17 chapters as Mudkip and 31 chapters as Marshtomp.

Zuzu (Japanese: ZUZU) was one of the Pokémon that Ruby has received in the Pokémon Adventures manga, a happy-go-lucky Pokémon. He tends to use it in the Toughness Category for contests.

History

Zuzu as a Mudkip

When Ruby picked one Pokémon in Prof. Birch's bag to use against Sapphire's Toro, he had chosen the Mudkip. Zuzu tends to have a running nose. Later on, he evolved into a Marshtomp at Slateport City and later evolved into a Swampert at Fortree City. Both during the battle at Sootopolis City and in the Seafloor Cavern, he partnered up with Sapphire's Toro against Archie and Maxie to free the Red and Blue Orbs. In the Emerald arc, he was used by Ruby's Battle Dome and Tower challenges. Then after he learned Hydro Cannon, from the bangle Kimberly has given Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, he teamed up with the other starters to defeat Guile Hideout. Ruby also uses Zuzu in the 'Tough' section of Pokémon Contests, thus mastering all the ranks during the 80-day challenge in the Ruby & Sapphire arc.

Trivia

  • Although Zuzu doesn't evolve into its final stage until volume 19, the cover art depicts him as a Swampert along with Sapphire's Toro (which by then was already a Blaziken the volume prior. This might be due to the fact that before being released in volume form, few to several rounds, even within the same chapter, may be left uncollected, and so the fans were expected to be aware of its evolution already, which happened mere chapters after the end of this volume. Alternatively, it may just be a result of the fact that Zuzu and Toro were always seen in the same evolution stage when placed in a volume cover together, just as Explotaro, Mega, and Feraligatr were in the covers for the Gold, Silver, & Crystal arc.
