During the history of Pokémon games, several [[event Pokémon]] given away have been set to show them as received in a '''fateful encounter''', as opposed to a normal capture. While this was a separate [[List of locations by index number (GBA)|location listed in Generation III]], in [[Generation IV]], it became merely another statistic of a Pokémon, allowing different areas to be listed while maintaining the specialness of the Pokémon.

Due to this flag, special events can be accessed in {{game2|HeartGold|SoulSilver|Platinum}} when specific Pokémon that are encountered by way of fateful encounters are in the party.

This was likely implemented due to the [[tweaking]] and [[Surf glitch]]es, which allow access to Shaymin in Diamond and Pearl, while this was removed in Platinum. Due to the way receipt and use of the Gracidea is programmed, if the Platinum Shaymin were not given this status, despite being able to be legitimately obtained with [[Oak's Letter]], it would not be able to transform into Sky Forme.
* Despite promotional material for events distributing Jirachi implying that the fateful encounter flag was required in order to unlock the {{pw|Night Sky's Edge}} [[Pokéwalker]] route, all Jirachi are capable of unlocking the route regardless of whether they were met in a fateful encounter.

This Meowth was met in a fateful encounter in Sword and Shield.

A fateful encounter (Japanese: 運命的出会 fateful encounter) is a flag attached to certain event Pokémon and some wild Mythical Pokémon that indicates they were met in a special manner.

In Generation III, it is used as an anti-cheat measure for Mew and Deoxys, penalizing players who obtained them through unofficial means. In Generation IV and V, starting with Pokémon Platinum, the presence of this flag has been used to trigger special events if the player has a certain Pokémon that was met in a "fateful encounter".

Pokémon obtained via event distributions often have the fateful encounter flag set. Events distributed prior to Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen did not use this flag, as it was not used in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
