Egg groups determine which Pokémon are able to interbreed in Pokémon breeding. Pokémon were first able to breed in the Second Generation games Pokémon Gold and Silver. Breeding allowed Pokémon to pass down DVs and moves to their children. Moves usually are inherited from the male Pokémon, while the child takes on the form of the mother in her basic form. A baby would hatch out of an egg after a specified number of steps in the game and would always be at level five.
EggGroups
Egg Groups (Japanese: タマゴグループ Egg Group) are categories which determine which Pokémon are able to interbreed. The concept was introduced in Generation II, along with breeding. Similar to types, a Pokémon may belong to either one or two Egg Groups.

When breeding, one typically has a 50/50 chance of getting male or female Pokémon. If the Pokémon is a Starter Pokémon, or any of a number of other types which have different gender ratios than 50-50, the results are skewed.  Some Pokémon are genderless; some species can be only male or only female. It's been mentioned on some web sites that there is a bug in the Third Generation games which makes some Azurills change gender when they evolve into Marills. This is the result of the fact that the gender ratios are different.
Overview
Egg Groups are based on biological traits of Pokémon species, generally allowing biologically similar species to breed. However, there are some oddities within Egg Groups: for example, the Field contains a particularly wide variety of Pokémon species, so that seemingly illogical pairings can be noted within it, such as Skitty and Wailord.

Egg Groups are generally preserved along evolutionary lines; however, baby Pokémon, Nidorina, Nidoqueen, and Shedinja are not in the same group as their evolutionary relatives: baby Pokémon, Nidorina and Nidoqueen are in the No Eggs Discovered and thus unable to breed, while Shedinja is in the Mineral (although it requires Ditto to breed due to being a gender-unknown Pokémon).

Breeding Chains
Egg Groups are not displayed in any core series game; however, they have been canonically mentioned in Pokémon Stadium 2 as a part of Earl Dervish's Pokémon Academy's extensive data banks, in Pokédex 3D, and in various strategy guides.
Many Pokémon are included in two different egg groups and can form what are known as breeding chains.  These link many unrelated Pokémon together, allowing moves that would not normally be accessible to certain Pokémon to be legal, like Heal Bell on Blissey.

TMs are also passed down through breeding through male Pokémon. Doing this would cause the moves to appear in the Pokémon's moveset if said Pokémon can learn the move via TM or Egg Move.
Breeding chains
Many Pokémon are included in two different Egg Groups and can form what are known as breeding chains. These link many unrelated Pokémon together, allowing moves that would not normally be accessible to certain Pokémon to be legal, like Heal Bell on Blissey.

Egg Groups
TMs are also passed down through breeding from the father. Any move in the father's current moveset that can be learned via TM, Egg Move, or Move Tutor (in Crystal) will be passed down to the Pokémon hatching from the Egg.
Ditto
Ditto can breed with any Pokémon except for Legendary Pokémon. However, Ditto can also breed with What is known as Gender unkown Pokémon.

Gender unknown
Connections
The following genderless Pokémon may only breed with Ditto.
The groups Ditto and No Eggs Discovered are unique in terms of connectivity, the first one allows breeding with any other group and the second one does not allow breeding with any Pokémon, not within this group nor with Ditto.

*Shedinja
In the Generation II, when the Egg Groups were introduced, most of the remaining groups were connected and could allow crossbreeding and passing down moves to other groups with exception of Amorphous, Mineral and Human-Like. All three groups were connected starting from Generation III.

Other important facts about breeding:
<br>
Azurill and Wynaut can be bred only by giving the father(/mother?) a Sea or Lax Incense to hold. (respectively)
<br>
Pichu will acquire Volt Tackle if the father(/mother?) is holding a Light Ball, but only in Pokémon Emerald.

Also only in Emerald, if the mother (or Ditto) is holding an Everstone, then the nature of either parent has a 50% chance of being passed down.

Egg Groups (Japanese: タマゴグループ Egg Group) are categories which determine which Pokémon are able to interbreed. The concept was introduced in Generation II, along with breeding. Similar to types, a Pokémon may belong to either one or two Egg Groups.

Overview

Egg Groups are based on biological traits of Pokémon species, generally allowing biologically similar species to breed. However, there are some oddities within Egg Groups: for example, the Field Group contains a particularly wide variety of Pokémon species, so that seemingly illogical pairings can be noted within it, such as Skitty and Wailord.

Egg Groups are generally preserved along evolutionary lines; however, baby Pokémon, Nidorina, Nidoqueen, and Shedinja are not in the same group as their evolutionary relatives: baby Pokémon, Nidorina and Nidoqueen are in the No Eggs Discovered Group and thus unable to breed, while Shedinja is in the Mineral Group (although it requires Ditto to breed due to being a gender-unknown Pokémon).

Egg Groups are not displayed in any core series game; however, they have been canonically mentioned in Pokémon Stadium 2 as a part of Earl Dervish's Pokémon Academy's extensive data banks, in Pokédex 3D, and in various strategy guides.

Breeding chains

Many Pokémon are included in two different Egg Groups and can form what are known as breeding chains. These link many unrelated Pokémon together, allowing moves that would not normally be accessible to certain Pokémon to be legal, like Heal Bell on Blissey.

TMs are also passed down through breeding from the father. Any move in the father's current moveset that can be learned via TM, Egg Move, or Move Tutor (in Crystal) will be passed down to the Pokémon hatching from the Egg.

Connections

The groups Ditto and No Eggs Discovered are unique in terms of connectivity, the first one allows breeding with any other group and the second one does not allow breeding with any Pokémon, not within this group nor with Ditto.

In the Generation II, when the Egg Groups were introduced, most of the remaining groups were connected and could allow crossbreeding and passing down moves to other groups with exception of Amorphous, Mineral and Human-Like. All three groups were connected starting from Generation III.

The number indicates the generation in which two Egg Groups were directly connected through a Pokémon.
