ElementalTypes
???
The ??? type (Japanese: <span lang="ja">???タイプ</span> ??? type), unlike the Bird, is an elemental type which existed as a non-glitch type from Generation II onward. However, no Pokémon bears this type. Pokémon eggs are typed solely with this before they hatch, and by extension, bad eggs are also of the ???-type.
The ??? type (Japanese: ???タイプ ??? type) is a type that exists only in Generations II, III, and IV. It was removed in the Generation V games and has not returned since.

Weaknesses and resistances
Battle properties
The ??? type has neither any weaknesses nor resistances: all damaging moves do regular damage to a Pokémon of the ??? type, and any damaging move hacked to be of the ??? type will do regular damage against all Pokémon.
The ??? type is neutrally effective against all types, and all types are neutrally effective against it.

???-type Pokémon
In the games
No Pokémon are ???-type; however, both eggs and bad eggs are given this type until they hatch. This can be seen in the Generation III status screen; however, in Generation II and Generation IV, egg status screens do not display type.
Curse
The move Curse was given the ??? type when introduced in Generation II, likely because of its mysterious nature. It is so far the only move which completely differs in its use between Pokémon of different types. Its type was changed to the Ghost type in Generation V.

If a pure Flying Pokémon uses Roost, it becomes a ???-type Pokémon until the end of the turn. However, all Flying-type Pokémon have two types (except Arceus which is unable to learn Roost).
Conversion cannot be used to become ???-type: Curse, the only move of this type, will be ignored by Conversion, such that if a Pokémon uses Conversion while the only other move it knows is Curse, Conversion will fail.

To obtain a ???-type Pokémon, the player must change a Pokémon to be a pure Flying type (with Color Change, Conversion or Conversion 2), followed by using Roost.
Eggs
Pokémon Eggs are displayed as being ???-type in Generation III on their status screen, to maintain the fact that the identity of the Pokémon inside is supposed to be unknown. This does not appear in Generation II, which uses a special status screen for Pokémon Eggs different from that of normal Pokémon, and was removed in Generation IV, when the section of a Pokémon's status screen that displays type was separated. From Generation IV on, Eggs are considered as Normal Pokémon by the game.

The game will not allow the player to use Conversion to convert to the ??? type. Curse, the only move of this type, will be ignored by Conversion, so that a Pokémon with only Curse and Conversion will result in the move failing.
Unusable moves
If a Shadow Pokémon has non-Shadow moves that it cannot use yet, they will be marked with ??? type.

Arceus
Arceus
Arceus has the Ability Multitype, which changes its type and appearance depending on the Plate it is holding. Likely as a precaution for Arceus hacked to be ???-type, a ???-type sprite of Arceus is present in ; however, it is never otherwise used without hacking.
Arceus's Multitype ability allows it to change types based on which Plate it holds. Although there is no ???-type plate, the code for has a sprite for ???-type Arceus. It is possible that this sprite was included to prevent the game from crashing if its base type was changed to be ??? type instead of Normal.
In the event Arceus is hacked to be in this form, it will still be Normal-type (or whatever type of plate it is holding) since the coloring of Arceus in each form is solely aesthetic, and the type is actually determined by Multitype. There is no way to make Arceus actually ???-type, and even when it's sent into battle it will revert to the appropriate form.

???-type moves
In the spin-off games
Curse
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon
Introduced in Generation II, Curse is the only move of the ??? type. Curse behaves differently depending on the type of the Pokémon using it; more specifically, if the Pokémon is of the Ghost, it will cut its HP in half and place a curse on the target Pokémon, while for any other type it will merely lower the Pokémon's Speed to raise Attack and Defense.
The moves Wide Slash, Vacuum-Cut, Spin Slash, and Excavate have the ??? type.

However in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, Explorers of Time, Explorers of Darkness and Explorers of Sky it is considered a Normal move, regardless of whether it is known by a Ghost Pokémon or not.

There is no actual purpose in Curse being a ???-type move besides to give it a mysterious nature. If hacked to be of any other type, the move will still work as normal.
While Excavate is an unobtainable status move and Vacuum-Cut deals fixed damage akin to Sonic Boom, Wide Slash and Spin Slash are physical moves which follow standard damage calculations, although Spin Slash has a wider range than Wide Slash. Both damaging moves bypass Wonder Guard and do not usually receive STAB.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon moves
These moves did not appear from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity onward.
Vacuum-Cut and Wide Slash are moves that are exclusive to Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and its sequel. However, the game displays the types of the moves as "None" rather than "???".

Shadow moves
Other uses
Shadow moves are typeless moves, rendering their typing unknown.

Unrevealed types
In Pokémon Colosseum, Shadow Pokémon have the move Shadow Rush until they are purified. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, more Shadow moves are introduced. Starting in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, these moves are super-effective against regular Pokémon and not very effective against other Shadow Pokémon.
On official material, the ??? type can be used to denote a type that has not yet been revealed. Leading up to the release of Pokémon X and Y, Sylveon's type was listed as ??? on official material until its actual type was revealed to be Fairy.

These typeless moves do not run exclusively off the user's Attack or Special Attack stat, instead depending on the move. This would later be extended to moves of the rest of the types in Generation IV.

Weather Ball's type changes depending on the weather condition. If Weather Ball is used when the field is under effect of Shadow Sky, Weather Ball changes to a typeless move.
Retirement
The ??? type is not present in the core series games from Generation V onward, as Eggs were changed in Generation IV to not display a type at all, and the only move which used the type, Curse, was changed to be Ghost type.

Other moves
In other languages
In the main series games, ???-type offensive moves can be hacked to exist. In generations prior to Generation IV, because the ???-type is not programmed to be either physical or special, even with the highest possible base power of 255, the move will do almost no damage.
??? type only changes its name in Spanish.

In addition, although the actual type for the moves Hidden Power and Judgment varies, both appear as Normal moves rather than ???-type moves. Note however that as the signature move of Arceus, the type for Judgment depends on the type of plate held by the user, acting as a Normal move if no plate is held. Thus, the Normal type, and not the ??? type, could be thought of as the unspecialized "default" type. This re-emphasizes the possibility that Curse is considered a ???-type move for its mysterious nature rather than for its different forms when used by Pokémon of different types.

For other uses of question marks in the Pokémon games, see Question marks.

The ??? type (Japanese: ???タイプ ??? type) is a type that exists only in Generations II, III, and IV. It was removed in the Generation V games and has not returned since.

Battle properties

The ??? type is neutrally effective against all types, and all types are neutrally effective against it.

In the games

Curse

The move Curse was given the ??? type when introduced in Generation II, likely because of its mysterious nature. It is so far the only move which completely differs in its use between Pokémon of different types. Its type was changed to the Ghost type in Generation V.

Conversion cannot be used to become ???-type: Curse, the only move of this type, will be ignored by Conversion, such that if a Pokémon uses Conversion while the only other move it knows is Curse, Conversion will fail.

From Generation IV on, Eggs are considered as Normal-type Pokémon by the game.

Unusable moves

If a Shadow Pokémon has non-Shadow moves that it cannot use yet, they will be marked with ??? type.

Arceus

Sprite for ???-type Arceus

Arceus has the Ability Multitype, which changes its type and appearance depending on the Plate it is holding. Likely as a precaution for Arceus hacked to be ???-type, a ???-type sprite of Arceus is present in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver; however, it is never otherwise used without hacking.

In the spin-off games

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon

The moves Wide Slash, Vacuum-Cut, Spin Slash, and Excavate have the ??? type.

These moves did not appear from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity onward.

Unrevealed types

On official material, the ??? type can be used to denote a type that has not yet been revealed. Leading up to the release of Pokémon X and Y, Sylveon's type was listed as ??? on official material until its actual type was revealed to be Fairy.
