When [[Hazel]] spots [[Almond]] by [[Mt. Moon]], she attempts to surprise him, but ends up startling him so much that he falls into a chasm. As Hazel watches him fall in horror, {{MPJ|Pikachu}} reminds her that they are in a book, and he will not actually die. When she tries to search for him, Pikachu runs off.

Hazel follows Pikachu to find two [[Ekans Brothers]] picking on a {{MPJ|Clefairy}}. She yells at the Ekans to scare them off, then introduces herself to Clefairy. To Hazel's surprise, Clefairy responds in human language. Clefairy recounts the ways the Ekans Brothers bully it, literally shrinking in fear as it speaks. Pikachu suggests for Hazel to train Clefairy, and she happily accepts.
 
A sleeping {{p|Metapod}} falls from a nearby tree, scaring Clefairy. Hazel encourages Clefairy to fight against it, but when the Metapod briefly opens its eyes, Clefairy jumps back in fear. As Metapod goes back into its tree, Clefairy apologizes. Shortly afterward, a voice calls out to Hazel, and she turns to see Almond annoyedly staggering toward her. When Almond spots Clefairy, he attempts to catch it, but Pikachu shocks him. After seeing Pikachu's strength, Clefairy laments its own weakness and begins to shrink in sadness.
 
The Ekans Brothers suddenly return, bringing along their cousin, {{p|Arbok}}. Arbok charges for Pikachu and grabs it by its tail, {{status|poison}}ing it. Arbok tries to charge for Hazel next, but Clefairy rushes forward and uses a powerful {{m|Mega Punch}} attack on it. The Arbok, along with the Ekans Brothers, are launched far away by the impact.
 
Hazel is shocked, but Clefairy does not understand what it has just done, reacting with confusion when Hazel compliments it. The Metapod suddenly drops from its tree again, startling Clefairy and causing it to shrink once more.
