If you explored earlier you might have come across someone trapped inside a barrel that you were unable to do anything about. The next time you talk to Professor Tangrowth, he will be alerted to the barrel by a voice, and you can follow him over to it. He tells you to try using cut on the chain. Climb up the crates to give it a go, but just like his earlier suggestions, this doesn't work.
The barrel will then tell you that they will teach you how to cook so well that you become stronger and are able to break the chain. The first recipe is for a salad which requires two leaves and a chopping board. The catch is that the chopping board needs to be perfectly smooth, so Professor Tangrowth suggests asking a Dartrix to help out.
Making Dartrix a home
Go back to the vegetable patch as there is a perfect space to make Dartrix's home. They live in the Pointy Tree-shaded Rocky Tall Grass habitat, which includes four watered patches of red grass, a pointy tree and a large boulder. Now that we know strength we can move the boulder closer to the tree for an easy new habitat.
Once Dartrix has appeared and has been registered in your Pokédex, they will have a request for you before they will help with the chopping board. You need to construct a perch and place it near their habitat. The recipe for this can be found in the area nearby. Once placed, return to Dartrix to learn the recipe for a chopping board.
Salad eating
Put the chopping board down in the kitchen, and use two leaves to make the salad, which will then be found in your inventory. Eat the Simple Salad, and Leafage will be powered up. This power up lasts for a certain number of Leafage uses, and then you'll need to eat another salad before you are powered up again. This upgrade allows you to pull up larger patches of grass, and to pull up plants from different surfaces, like duckweed in water or moss on mossy stone.
Return to Greedent and they will teach you how to make bread next. For this we need a bread oven and wheat. Return to the vegetable patches and make two Uplifting Duckweed habitats, which can be made with four patches of duckweed in the water. This is for a later request. Then get Dartrix to follow you, and help grow the available vegetables with their ability. You'll need plenty of wheat and beans.
Down by the hot spring
Torkoal is the Pokémon we need to teach us about bread ovens, so follow the rail tracks into the hot spring area. You can either use Rototiller to move four mossy patches, or your powered up Leafage to pull the moss up next to the hot spring water. This will create the Mossy Hot Spring habitat where Torkoal can be found. While we're here it's also a good idea to place four moss patches by a mossy boulder for the Mossy Boulder habitat we'll need later.
While we wait for them to arrive we want to make the path to the Pokémon Center from our Torkoal house as easy as possible, much like with Slowpoke. This means leveling terrain, adding in stairs, clearing debris, and making sure the ground outside is moist and easy to walk on. When ready, return to their habitat and let them know the path is clear.
Hot as an oven
Once Torkoal reaches the Pokémon Center, speak to them again and they will teach you the recipe for the bread oven. Ask them to follow you, as you will need a Fire-type for the next part of this mission. You can then make a bread oven at the work bench and place it in your kitchen. Choose to cook three pieces of wheat in the oven, and Torkoal will power it for you.
This will make Simple Bread which will automatically be added to your inventory. Chow down, and your Cut skills will be powered up allowing you to shred through many more objects, including the chain the barrel is attached to. Climb up the crates once more, and charge up your cut by holding ZR. This time your slash is more than enough to cut through the chain.
Chef Dente is here
The person stuck in the barrel turns out to be Chef Dente, a food-loving Greedent who is happy to teach you how to cook. She tells you that the town used to be extremely popular and was full of restaurants and clubs with good food and music, but it has been desolate for a long time. She hopes that together we can restore it.
Talk to Chef Dente again and she will be eager to teach you her next recipe. This is for a hamburger, and requires four beans as well as a frying pan. For the frying pan we'll need to smelt copper ore into copper ingots, so that will be the next part of our mission.
