Learning how to add color
The following side quest is completely optional, however, it does provide you with permanent upgrades to your crafting ability. If you are interested in the building and decorating aspect of the game then you will want to complete these requests so that you can enjoy all of the upgrades.
Completing Smearguru's side quest will give you the power to change the color of certain blocks and furniture for when you are decorating the towns, allows you to add patterns to some pieces, and paint different parts of furniture pieces different colors. You'll be able to paint things a single color yourself, but you will need a Pokémon like Smearguru with the paint ability if you want anything more complicated.
Finding inspiration for Smearguru
To start the side quest you need to find Smearguru. You can find them standing in front of an easel under a gazebo by the beach. This area is to the bottom right of the main island. Speak to them and they will ask you for a leppa berry. Don't worry if you don't have one on you as there are a few leppa trees nearby. Return to give them the leppa berry, then do something else while you wait for the next part of the quest.
Making a home for Pawmo
When they're ready, speak to Smearguru again and they will tell you that they were inspired by the leppa berry. They ask you to find a Pokémon with the crush ability, and to give them a leppa berry too. They give you the plan for a Tantalising Restaurant habitat, which requires a seat, table, menu board and plated food. In an abandoned building nearby you will find everything you need except the seat and the berry. Put it together, and before long Pawmo will arrive.
Give Pawmo a leppa berry and it will take a short while for them to crush the berry into paint. You might want to do something else while you are waiting. Once you have your paint, talk to Smearguru again, and they will ask if they can paint something red. You can choose any applicable item from your inventory, but there is also a plain table and chair near Smearguru's easel that you can pick up and use. Once they've painted it, talk to them again and they will give you the recipe for paint balloons. These will allow you to paint things for yourself.
Powering paint up
We're not done with the quest quite yet. Next you will need to craft a balloon and use it on another piece of furniture to level up your painting ability. Talk to Smearguru after you have painted something, and they will tell you that they refuse to be outdone by your painting prowess. After this you can now add patterns to furniture by talking to Smearguru. You will still need to talk to them, or another Pokémon with the paint ability, if you want to add a pattern to an item as you can't do it yourself.
Time for the classics
The next time you speak to Smearguru they will say that they have run out of inspiration. Show them part of a fossil and it will inspire them to try a new painting technique. This will allow them to paint different parts of furniture pieces in different colors. Like with painting patterns on furniture you still won't be able to do this for yourself.
For the final part of this side quest, bring Smearguru a piece of furniture and some paint. When asking them to paint it, pick different colors for the different parts. From now on any Pokémon with the paint skill will be able to do this for you, and not just Smearguru.
