Harley's Banette (Japanese: ハーリーのジュペッタ Harley's Juppeta) is Harley's second known Pokémon.

History

Hoenn

Banette with Cacturne at the Hoenn Grand Festival

Banette debuted in Deceit and Assist when it became Harley's turn to perform on stage during the appeal round of the Hoenn Grand Festival. It immediately proceeded to creep out the audience, as well as May, with an unhinged smile and laughter, before using a combination of Will-O-Wisp and Thunder aimed at itself. Despite the pain, Banette laughed in a very creepy manner, which left the audience uncomfortable, but the performance was nonetheless praised by the Contest Judges, earning Harley a score of 89 and allowing him to advance to the next round of the competition.

In Rhapsody in Drew, Banette battled alongside Cacturne against May's Bulbasaur and Beautifly in the first round of the Grand Festival's Battle Stage. Despite the good start and momentarily lead in the battle, Banette and Cacturne soon found themselves struggling to handle their opponents's impressive combinations and were eventually defeated, thus eliminating Harley from the tournament.

Kanto

In New Plot, Odd Lot!, Harley lent Banette to Jessie for the Mulberry City Contest in an attempt to prevent May from getting her final Ribbon. The battle took place in the next episode during the finals of the Contest, where, as Banette was Harley's Pokémon, it was told to use Frustration continually. Since all Banette did was repeatedly use the same attack, May was eventually able to counter its attacks, which ultimately resulted in a loss for Jessie, and the plan of having May not get her fifth Ribbon having failed.

In May, We Harley Drew'd Ya!, Harley used Banette during the appeal round of the Kanto Grand Festival, where, just as it did during the Hoenn Grand Festival, it gave a rather uncomfortable and creepy performance and allowed Harley to advance to the Battle Stage of the competition.

In The Unbeatable Lightness of Seeing!, Banette briefly appeared in a photo album belonging to the Fennel Valley's Nurse Joy, an avid fan of battles and Contests, and Harley cheerfully gave her an autograph.

Personality and characteristics

Banette's creepy demeanor

Fitting with Harley's personality and demeanor, Banette is quite a creepy Pokémon who tends to make others very uncomfortable; from its mere appearance to its behavior during Contest performances, and battles. Similar to Harley's other Pokémon, Banette can be very menacing during Pokémon Contests, displaying its moves and skills in such a way that it leaves the people watching it perform feeling very frightened, including the panel of judges and the announcer.

Accordingly, Banette is perfectly aware of how it makes others feel and actively seems to enjoy leaving others scared and creeped out by its behavior. Even when being hit by its own attacks, Banette often breaks out in creepy laughter as part of its appeal, as seen in Deceit and Assist.

Banette is able to battle effectively even when not under Harley's command; when Jessie borrowed it for the Mulberry City Contest, Banette dutifully followed her commands, despite not having the slightest affection for her, which in turn boosted its Frustration attack to its advantage, albeit only initially. Banette was shown to be good at two-on-two Contest Battles, easily getting along with Cacturne and was able to battle in harmony with it.
