Multiplayer is a major feature in the Pokémon games. Every core series and side series game has some level of multiplayer functionality, and many spin-off games have some as well.
In the core series games
Generation I
In the Generation I games, all multiplayer functionality is performed at the Cable Club, which is located at the right-hand counter in any Pokémon Center when two games are connected using a Game Link Cable or Nintendo 3DS wireless communications.
After both players' games are linked, trades are performed in the Trade Center, while link battles are performed in the Colosseum. Pokémon Yellow's Cable Club has an updated Colosseum 2, which contains three different Cups.
Generation II
The Generation II games have largely the same multiplayer functionality as the previous generation. The Cable Club is now located on the second floor of any Pokémon Center, with the Trade Center and Colosseum now having separate counters.
In addition, the Time Capsule allows for trading with the Generation I games.
Generation III
Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald
In addition to the multiplayer functionality found in the previous generation, Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald allow up to four players to mix records at the far right counter, called the Record Corner in Ruby and Sapphire, and the Cable Club in Emerald. All games may use a Game Link Cable, while Emerald may use a Game Boy Advance Wireless Adapter (if not communicating with Ruby and Sapphire).
The Berry Blender can be used with up to four players to make more effective Pokéblocks.
Up to four players can participate in Pokémon Contests together.
Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald
Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald introduce the Union Room, which can be accessed using a Wireless Adapter. It allows for link battles and text chat.
Like previous games, the Trade Center and Colosseum can still be accessed, now located at the right-hand counter, named the Direct Corner in FireRed and LeafGreen and the Cable Club in Emerald. A Wireless Adapter or Game Link Cable can be used here. If a Wireless Adapter is connected, Berry Crush can also be played.
In Pokémon Emerald only, the Battle Tower supports Multi Battles. Two players can team up in this mode using either a Wireless Adapter or Game Link Cable.
